A powerful polemic on the state of black America that savages the idea of a post-racial society

America’s great promise of equality has always rung hollow in the ears of African Americans. But today the situation has grown even more dire. From the murders of black youth by the police, to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act, to the disaster visited upon poor and middle-class black families by the Great Recession, it is clear that black America faces an emergency—at the very moment the election of the first black president has prompted many to believe we’ve solved America’s race problem.

Democracy in Black is Eddie S. Glaude Jr.'s impassioned response. Part manifesto, part history, part memoir, it argues that we live in a country founded on a “value gap”—with white lives valued more than others—that still distorts our politics today. Whether discussing why all Americans have racial habits that reinforce inequality, why black politics based on the civil-rights era have reached a dead end, or why only remaking democracy from the ground up can bring real change, Glaude crystallizes the untenable position of black America--and offers thoughts on a better way forward. Forceful in ideas and unsettling in its candor, Democracy In Black is a landmark book on race in America, one that promises to spark wide discussion as we move toward the end of our first black presidency.

—Cornel West

“He proves his point cogently… with more than enough documentation to move the argument along this new and painful track…This is every bit as important a book as Coates’ more personal account: essential reading.” --Booklist

A Tour De Force
By Read-A-Lot
Professor Eddie Glaude Jr., of Princeton comes out firing on all cylinders in this book. He really has his pulse on the race situation that continues to plague America and has come up with some thoughts that I'm sure will become part of the prescript of any discussions concerning race. One such idea is the "value gap", which Eddie describes as, "...(the belief that white people are valued more than others) and racial habits (the things we do, without thinking, that sustain the value gap) undergird racial inequality, and how white and black fears block the way to racial justice in this country."

"We talk about the achievement gap in education or the wealth gap between white Americans and other groups, but the value gap reflects something more basic: that no matter our stated principles or how much progress we think we’ve made, white people are valued more than others in this country, and that fact continues to shape the life chances of millions of Americans. The value gap is in our national DNA."

This is an interesting new angle in which to view the issue of racism, i.e., white supremacy. When you frame white supremacy in those terms, there certainly isn't much to argue with there. Clearly white people and white lives are valued more than others in America. In support of this "value gap" theory he quotes from Dr. King,
"that in this country the idea of racial equality remains 'a loose expression for improvement.'"

And by the way his understanding of Dr. King is superb, many try to lock King into a dream state, but if you listen to and read King from 1967 to the time of his assassination, you would think of him as a totally different person than the I have a dream King. And the radical King is rarely mentioned or praised in print, public or schools. Eddie is unafraid to raise the radical King, though I'm not of the belief that courage is needed in doing this, truth is truth. There is a chapter in the book titled Restless Sleep After King's Dream. I digress.

But here is what the author is attempting to convey in this book, "Most Americans see inequality—and the racial habits that give it life—as aberrations, ways we fail to live up to the idea of America. But we’re wrong. Inequality and racial habits are part of the American Idea. They are not just a symptom of bad, racist people who fail to live up to pristine ideals. We are, in the end, what we do." Is that not correct? We all have heard the arguments of reverse racism, I'm not a racist, Black people need to take responsibility, etc. etc.

Eddie does a fantastic take down of these rhetorical devices while clearly establishing that "Our democratic principles do not exist in a space apart from our national commitment to white supremacy. They have always been bound tightly together, sharing bone and tissue." Eddie provides several anecdotes that intelligibly illustrate the "value gap" and how it effects the lives of Black people.

President Obama takes a heap of criticism from Eddie and even those who disagree will find Eddie's arguments logical, though I did detect a bit of contradiction. He also takes to task the modern civil rights leaders and their failure to move the needle. His definition of liberal is quite different from what usually comes to mind and challenges readers to redefine their own definitions. So what of solutions? Eddie offers up, a revolution of values and a more strident democracy as the way forward. "A revolution of value upends the belief that white people are more valued than others....It involves three basic components: (1) a change in how we view government; (2) a change in how we view black people; and (3) a change in how we view what ultimately matters to us as Americans." He has great respect and admiration for the Forward Together moral movement as well as the #blacklivesmatter campaign.

Perhaps his boldest and most controversial recommendation is the "blank-out" campaign. A trip to the presidential ballot box in 2016, but instead of choosing the lesser of two evils that no doubt imprisons us to the status quo, we write in none of the above, thereby calling for a new democracy while still exercising the franchise to quell the screaming crowd of citizens who instinctively cry, "you must vote." I'm sure he will be roundly criticized for this suggestion.

Though I have some minor quibbles, none worth mentioning, this is a 5star effort.
The book is not at all academic, which in this case I mean as a compliment and
he supplies plenty of analogies to help readers grasp his explanations, these analogies make an already accessible book that much more of an easygoing read. Surely you will see this book on many year end "best" lists.

Would America have been America Without her Negro people? DuBois
By Terry Teacher
This book resonated with me on so many levels. The first being I’m not crazy/out of touch - someone else share my thoughts (a scholar even). The author, Glaude, unfolds masterfully the true condition of Black Americans in America; he pulls no punches. This book is so informative. I found myself reading this book every chance I got.
The author’s verbiage/break down of the “value gap” - how some men and women are valued less than others because of the color of their skin - and how this gap is infused in our so called ‘democratic’ system, as well as ‘racial habits’ (things we do to sustain this gap) could be considered the theme of this book. This value gaps informs all decisions -employment, educ, housing, and policy etc. To quote the author, ‘…black America has experienced and is experiencing a depression…more like the symptoms of a national congenital disease than the flu.’
The author illuminates how we like to think of our nation as the chosen moral nation (‘shining city on the hill’ Ronald Reagan) and how our collective active forgetting/dismembering determines the kind of story we tell ourselves. We tend to forget all the hypocrisy this country was built on as well as how much of Black history dealt with ‘waging a relentless war against white supremacy’.
The book reports on heart wrenching personal stories of the effect on the foreclosure crisis that hit African Americans (AA) more than anyone else – not only monetarily but also mentally – entire family breakdowns and more than likely will be broke down for generations not to mention how we’re raising our children with the belief that their lives don’t matter.
The author breaks down and compares the traditional/liberal with the conservative AA politician and how they pretty much all go through lip service with no real change occurring in the AA community – not even attempting to close the value gap…. ‘Standing by silently as this economic devastation swallowed black America’. Our President is not excused from these list of politicians – ‘AA have suffered tremendously on Obama’s watch’. I wholeheartedly agree that ‘changing policies and addressing structural racism are the first steps toward undoing our racial habits.’ Initiatives such as ‘My Brothers Keeper’ are Pie in the sky programs.
So called black leaders/TV pundits/organizations are also called out and reflected on in a very real way – from Rev Al to DeRay Mckesson; again, the author pulls no punches. Some of the facts the book reveals about these individuals and the “racial theatre” they go through will leave your mouth open. Information on the young leaders of today (including DeRay and Netta) that I’m so proud of, and their so called confrontive (I call highly effective) tactics as well as current movements such as #BLACKLIVESMATTER are reported on.
I really appreciated all the real and meaningful quotes from MLK (ones you never hear), James Baldwin and DuBois.

“The value gap is in our national DNA.”

Helpful, but Painful, Read
By Steve Cavallaro
Like many people, I find discussions about race difficult. It is hard to build up the trust to speak honestly without judgment. It is awkward and difficult. So when I saw this book available for review I thought I'd get a copy, as if Eddie Glaude Jr. and I were sitting across the table from one another in a beer-less summit of sorts.

There are many good things about this book. He tells it like he honestly sees it (which means it can be painfully honest). Politically, he doesn't portray Democrats as perfect, or even President Obama, not Republicans as all evil (though he disagrees strongly with many policies). We will get to that later.

The strength of the book, for me, was chapters 2-4. He attempts to get to the heart of the long-term, on-going race issues in this nation. This has to do with the value gap, racial habits and white fear. From the beginning this nation has valued blacks less than whites. The end of slavery hasn't ended it. The end of Jim Crow laws hasn't ended it. It is a matter of the heart that is worked out in society. I think some of his examples are flawed. For instance, on page 31 he addresses the diseases that kill blacks at a higher rate than whites. But heart disease, cancer and AIDS get plenty of press and research money. It isn't like these diseases are ignored because they kill blacks. But I agree with him that there is a value gap. Generally speaking, black lives don't seem to matter as much in our society. The rates of incarcerated blacks is not just about poverty and crime, but also a flawed criminal justice system.

His discussion of disremembering is particularly helpful. This is the collective memory of a society which leaves out some of the ugly realities of our history or particular events. We do this, as a culture, to think the best about ourselves. He doesn't get to its root in pride, but this is something not often discussed.

"When we disremember an event, an egregious moment in the past, we shape how we live in the present. ... Disremembering is active forgetting. ... What we put in and leave out of our stories tells us something about who we are."

As a part of this, even when a challenging aspect of our past is brought us, we tend to objectify it. Those people are bad, but we rarely, if ever, think "I could do that too. If I were there I may very well have been one of the perpetrators."

The little white boy across the street from him learned on day one that he was not supposed to play with black children. We all pick up unspoken ideas about race. "Racial habits are formed by the outcomes we see in the world rather than by the complex processes that produced those outcomes." With so much poverty in the African-American community, many assume that they are lazy. He talks about "opportunity hoarding" in which a majority culture tends to keep the good stuff. We are often blind to the "way social networks reproduce inequality: white individuals benefit from being part of white social groups." He talks about how we often get jobs through social networks, but think we "earn it." Of the 14 jobs I've had over the years (at times working more than one) all but 2 were the result of knowing someone. When we consider it, that is astounding. This points to the need for internships for minorities so they can develop a social network AND the skills to get better jobs.

One of those habits we pick up is that of masking, particularly how we feel about racial matters. We don't want to talk honestly about race at Starbucks, or anywhere else. Blacks are afraid of being labeled the angry black man, and whites are afraid of being labeled a clueless racist. Additionally, we participate in the racial theater led by prominent civil rights leaders, and even our President. A theater that doesn't actually resolve anything, but seems to just keep picking at the wounds.

"White fear is the general frame of mind that black people are dangerous, not only to white individuals because they are prone to criminal behavior, but to the overall well-being of our society."

White fear is a political fear, and an economic fear. I recall as a young person being afraid of losing out due to affirmative action and minority scholarships (which I hope and pray my kids get!). It is largely about self-interest. Those in the lower economic or social ladders tend to fear those above, and those in the middle and higher tend to fear those below supplanting them. This has been common in our culture with new immigrants (Italians, Polish etc), but African-Americans have persistently been part of that perceived threat while other groups have moved up the ladder and began to share in white fear. Political fear "takes fears based in narrow concerns and gives them a more generalized fear."

In addition to the Great Black Depression (the recession hit black communities far harder than white ones), we've seen the dissolution of the black social structures that have enabled black people to think and grow in relative safety (black churches, colleges, press etc.). In some ways they are losing their voice.

His chapter on President Obama and the Black Liberals is a good history of black political thought and groups in America. He discusses the shifts, and failures. Ultimately they have capitulated to white supremacy and the lie of "color-blindness". It is the idea that if we just get the right person in power the plight of the African-American community will end. The liberal politician becomes a messiah figure. Don't worry, white conservatives (and liberals) do this too. He notes the failure to hold politicians accountable as part of the problem (this goes far beyond black democratic life).

"The whole business of black politics becomes the political project of black liberals, with their latent desire for the disappearance of black America. Looks like we have been accomplices in our own demise after all."

While this book was very helpful for me, I saw some fundamental problems as well. In his book Bloodlines, John Piper notes that for a minority culture everything is seen as a race issue, while for a majority culture nothing is seen as a race issue. There are things that Glaude sees as race issues, or solely as race issues, which may not be. His thinking is reductionistic at times. One example is voter ID laws. He sees this as an attempt to suppress the black vote. My own approval of voter ID laws has to do with addressing voter fraud (but I'd be what he calls a right wing extremist). I see room for compromise in how the laws are written so that the black vote is not suppressed (free gov't IDs for people on welfare for instance). I don't want to exclude any citizens from voting (black, Asian, Hispanic etc.). I do want to prevent people from voting more than once, and from non-citizens from exercising the rights of citizens.

His solutions don't seem compelling to me, though at times I am also tempted to vote "none of the above" too. As someone who teaches religion, I'd hope he would bring some theology into play. No, I'm not talking simply about forgiveness. For instance, the answer to the value gap is the imago dei. He seems to have no objective reason for our equality, a problem expressed in the existential ethics of Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia and other places. It is not simply a white/black thing but one that plagues every culture.

This was a very helpful and insightful book despite its flaws. It is a book I'd recommend to others to help better understand the history of race relations and politics in this country. While I'll disagree with him on a number of points, I'm better for reading it. It would be nice to sit across from a table from him, over beer, even if we raise our voices at times.

(I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purposes of review.)

Food Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know, by Robert Paarlberg

The politics of food is changing fast. In rich countries, obesity is now a more serious problem than hunger. Consumers once satisfied with cheap and convenient food now want food that is also safe, nutritious, fresh, and grown by local farmers using fewer chemicals. Heavily subsidized and underregulated commercial farmers are facing stronger push back from environmentalists and consumer activists, and food companies are under the microscope. Meanwhile, agricultural success in Asia has spurred income growth and dietary enrichment, but agricultural failure in Africa has left one-third of all citizens undernourished - and the international markets that link these diverse regions together are subject to sudden disruption.

The second edition of Food Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know® has been thoroughly updated to reflect the latest developments and research on today's global food landscape, including biofuels, the international food market, food aid, obesity, food retailing, urban agriculture, and food safety. The second edition also features an expanded discussion of the links between water, climate change, and food, as well as farming and the environment. New chapters look at livestock, meat and fish and the future of food politics.

Paarlberg's book challenges myths and critiques more than a few of today's fashionable beliefs about farming and food. For those ready to have their thinking about food politics informed and also challenged, this is the book to read.

Review

"The author is an academic, not a journalist, and his efforts to get the food facts right ring through every page. Paarlberg challenges many of the ideas that are frequently voiced - but rarely questioned - in popular food discourse...Although many of his claims call into question sacrosanct principles in activist and academic circles, there are good reasons to hear Paarlberg out; he backs up his arguments with data, and writes based on decades of experience as a political scientist and policy analyst working in the field." --Nature Geoscience

"Paarlberg's book is a timely contribution to the discussion about the politics of food, both domestically and internationallyEL. Although advocates of alternative farming methods are unlikely to agree with Food Politics, they should nevertheless read it. Paarlberg is a serious, knowledgeable scholar." --Journal of Politics

"[Paarlberg] is one of the most distinguished academics in the field of global food politics and is able to draw on a lifetime of research. Although the book is clearly underpinned by a considerable body of evidence, the writing style is engaging and easily digestible. It would serve as an excellent introduction to the topic for students." --International Studies Review

"Going well beyond its title, Food Politics addresses key questions about agriculture, including consumers' concerns about food safety, producers' concerns about price volatility, and taxpayers' concerns about subsidies. Paarlberg organizes his material around a long list of questions about food policies and practices...His answers to these and many other questions are accessible and nuanced." --Foreign Affairs

"A much needed corrective to a clanging bandwagon of culinary protest that asks well-off consumers to drop out, stay local and go green, while the rest of the world worries about its next bowl of rice." --The Texas Observer

"The great strength of Food Politics is the breadth of topics covered. For an undergraduate class, this book will provide students exposure to the world of food production and provisioning and the underlying political and social ideas and research that shape food and our relationship to itEL.As the subtitle suggests, Paarlberg covers almost every topic that one should know about food. Additionally, Paarlberg uses simple but precise language to cover the vast array of food topics...The strengths of the book encouraged me to use it in a directed readings course." --The American Journal of Agricultural Economics

What a terrific book for teaching!
By ron herring
What a terrific book for teaching! The only complaint the students had was: 'it's too optimistic.' So then we read The End of Food and -- you guessed it -- 'it's too pessimistic.' That's actually a good pairing: Paarberg's techno-market optimism is a good foil for doomsday scenarios so common in the media. The formatting in Paarlberg's book is user-friendly, intuitive. The Q and A format is stimulating and retains focus for each section. Paarlberg's prose is admirably clear and jargon-free except when explaining jargon that students will encounter in political discourse. The coverage is broad and many concrete examples illustrate important points effectively, culled from experiences all over the world. Food Politics is a sophisticated treatment of a very broad canvass of important issues.

Great little book
By Robi
I found this book at a flea market, took it home and made really tasty, easy meals, soups, side dishes, puddings and breakfast.

No pretty photos just 365 easy recipes!

I Served number #201 "Spaghetti With Tomatoes, Bacon, and Onions" to guests,(I added Red Pepper flacks, roasted red peppers and portabella mushrooms because I like them) and got rave reviews.

#236 " Tricolor Bell Pepper Sauce with Imported Black Olives and Anchovies" was wonderful.

#84 "Spaghetti with lemon butter" is super easy to make and a great side dish for shrimp.

#209 Linguine Tuna Black olives & Tomatoes, M-m-m-m.
I melted cheese over this one.

I have NOT put on a pound. I watch the amount of pasta I eat and feel up on all the goodies.
I have gone to Amazon and bought this book for friends and family.

A true mixed bag of good, great and no way....
By T. Reinhardt
I have had this book for years. Its publication date is 1988. I have had it at least 10 years, long before a low carb life style was thought to be a good thing. When I was going through all my cook books the other day I came accross this book of generally very easy and some surprizingly elegant pasta recipes some that can be made quickly for company.
First the good:
With a fair number of these recipes you can produce a hearty comfort-type entree with with mostly pantry type ingredients. Who would have thought that spaghetti with parsley butter (spaghetti, butter, garlic, parsley) can make a satisfying and elegant entree? Well I didnt. But it does. And it makes and even better first course, lunch or side dish. The same goes for Spaghetti with walnuts and parmesan (spaghetti, olive oil, garlic, walnuts, parmesan, parlsey...and add blue cheese to this one if you like). throughout this book are simple put-toghether dishes like this that you can add to your usual stable of week night dinners for variety. Other examples of these simple recipes are spaghetti with lemon butter and peas, elbows with butter, parmesan and peas, and fetticcini with tuna and peas.
On the more exotic side are a rabbit sauce for your pasta, a cavier and pasta concoction and a section an asian noodles. Quite a few of all of the dishes are on the rich (read calorie laden) side... One chapter with no cook sauces is a bit lighter. The dessert section is very sweet and very rich.
I think a lot of these recipes could be *lightened up* with alternate products... fat free half and half instead of cream, fat free milk instead of milk, egg substitute instead of eggs..low fat cheeses, etc.
On the plus side..there are many many recipes to choose from, many with things you already have at home. On the minus side, without reworking some of these...its a cholestol nightmare (no, not all of them...but a good number) It fairly easy to read. A nice font, easy directions. Suggestions to change the basic recipes... Alternate ingredient choices. very nice. Thankfully no screaming elbow macaroni cartoons running from smiling pots of boiling water.
A minus here I need to note...having had the book for so long...Its not exactly a spiral, more like a loose leaf that holds punched pages...but some of the holes have ripped like they would in your school binder. Or they just dont stay where they should any more. Essentially i have one ring holding in all the pages now. Not a good thing for all the pages. In a few years, I think I will just have pages and that will be just a big mess.
Times have changed and tastes have changed. There is an appreciation for a lighter style of cooking. Its hard to say if I would buy this when the last ring goes and pasta recipes fall all over my kitchen. I can't say that this hasnt been helpful, because any cookbook that helps me make a dinner out of what i already have, is a help. I think I will only know what I will do when the time comes because this truly was a mixed bag.
I can see this being a good book for someone who does alot of pantry cooking. Someone just starting out because the recipes are very simple (well alot of them) and most take a minimum of ingredients and prep. Or someone interested in a good volume of only pasta dishes.

One of the best cookbooks I have
By Melissa Bach
I am a dedicated home cook and I also work as a personal cook for a private client. I rely on this book again and again for unique and delicious pasta recipes. I have not made anything from this book that has been a dud, in fact, I often don't even bother to taste for seasoning adjustment--it's that precise and on-key. Like the reviewer below, I haven't gotten anywhere near to exhausting the possibilities, and every time I open the book I have a hard time deciding which direction to go in because they all look so good!
And just to clarify, when I say "unique" recipes, I don't mean things that require you to make a trip to a specialty market, like burdock, or fava beans. At random, here are five recipe titles to give you an idea: Lamb Stew with Herbed Elbows; Seafood Lasagne; Rigatoni with Cauliflower and Garlic-Anchovy Oil; Creamy Tuna Sauce with Capers and Lemon; and Spinach-Stuffed Manicotti with Red Pepper Bechamel Sauce. Oh, and let's not forget dessert! How about Lemon-Scented Pastina Souffle? Or Couscous, Dried Fruit and Honey Pudding?
If you turn to pasta as part of your cooking repetoire, you must have this cookbook on your shelf. There, don't I make decision making easy?

Classical training light with five pages of technique taged on.
By Jeremy Deats
Some people will not like my review of this book. However, that doesn't change the truth of what I'm about to explain. Dena Murray's book is marketed as a "vocal technique" book for contemporary music, however the "technique" this book does focus on is more the classical training: Keep your larynx low, you're throat open, focus on placement of the Italian vowel sounds, and practice scales to improve pitch and work the registers. This is nothing new, this is the formula that has been applied to train opera singers for many generations and if you want this information then Dena's book does an ok job of putting that form of traditional training together in a nice package here. I say 'ok' because I believe there are better books out there; the techniques that helped me the most are not found here.

Considering that this book is marketed towards popular music vocalist and not traditional/classical singers, I'm giving this two stars. My problem with this book is outside of theater, I think the classical approach, while proven- has become a bit stale. Modern research by Thomas Appell and others have shown the science behind the human voice, we all do not have two registers as Dena states. This is probably what she was told years and years ago and that's why she teaches it, but if you read Appeal's book you'll discover a detailed report of the science of the human voice. Dena seems to dodge middle voice altogether, in this book she says "there is a middle voice, but you need to develop chest and head first". this is the classical training school of thought. Dena's approach is what you want for opera and theater vocals. It's also ok foundation. If your practice the scales she provides and the techniques she presents you're voice will improve. But that's not the bottom line here. There are other systems that will get you there faster, more modern techniques that teach style along with technique.

Dena's classical roots are also revealed in her classification of the registers, you simply calls the head register "falsetto", which implies ignorance. Since falsetto implies a technique (low tension which blows the chords appart to produce an light airy sound), head voice can most certainly also be full voice and not falsetto. This was one of a few red flags found in this book to me. Ms. Murray may be an excellent teacher, she is definitely a good writer, but a lot of her information is just beyond subjectively wrong.

SLS (Speech Level Singing) is a system developed by Seth Riggs, it's a different approach to vocal training than the classical system presented in this book and by classical instructors that's geared for popular music. SLS is not a gimmick as it now the leading system for popular music. Used for almost two decades now by amazing vocalist like: Michael Jackson, Keith Urban, Ozzy Osborne to name a small few. SLS focuses on building middle voice instead of giving it a back seat for months (or years) as Ms. Murray's approach would. "Middle voice" which is really just a SLS term for sweet notes found where the chest and head voice meet is crtical for popular music, you hear popular artist focus there (and seldom jump into head).

Some other problems I have with the material: C1 is presented as "middle C", I would have thought this a misprint except Ms. Murray goes on to talk about it. In case you're wondering "middle C" is commonly known as C4 on a piano. The most disturbing problem I found with Ms. Murray's material was information on vocal range, on her diagrams she shows a tenor should be able to sing from F2 an octave and a half below middle C up to G5, an octave and a half above middle C. This supports her comment that "everyone should have a three octave vocal range", which isn't true. In opera parts written for the Tenor will span from Bb below C3 up to "tenor high C" which is C5. That's just a tad over two octaves and most parts are written from C3-C5. Also almost all popular music for male tenors is between this range as well (actually most popular music stays within an octave and a half).

If you follow her advice you're likely to find yourself feeling inadequate with your range and you're "true voice" will emerge very clean with no color of style. If you want to sing opera this is perfect, if you want to be a rock or pop vocalist you may want to use this material as a foundation that's ok, just realize it's a very light foundation and if you stick with this you'll be a very generic singer. I actually think quite a bit less of the Musicians Institute series after reading this book. To her credit, it's possible Dena Murray's classroom material is distant from this book. There really is no implied connection by her own written words, but it is part of the MIT series, so my comments are not without merit.

My advice: See books by Seth Riggs, Roger Love, Thomas Appell and Jamie Vendera. These guys have current techniques that can be proven. While this book may give you a foundation suitable for move to the next level in any genre, there are better places to start for popular music vocalist.

Improved my voice quickly.
By Barrett Tagliarino
I've used many vocal method books, some with tapes or CDs, over the last few years - Jeffrey Allen, Seth Riggs, even the classic Marafioti, etc., - and this one is the best. The explanations are clear and helpful, giving you simple objectives to concentrate on while singing along with the exercises on the CD. The section on breathing is revolutionary. It is different from the other methods and seems to result in better pitch control.
The exercises on the CDs are very intense and get your cords warmed up & stretched out quickly. I recommend this book for anyone who's serious about learning to sing.

"Jaime Vendera, Author of Raise Your Voice"
By Jaime Vendera
Dena Murray, one of the head instructors at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood California, introduces a book dedicated to the art of vocal technique. As the name suggests, this is a guide to finding your real voice. The book sticks to the basics, in order to uncover your natural voice, and give the singer a foundation to work upon.

In this 60 page book, Dena focuses on approaching vocal instruction from a standpoint of finding and eliminating "trouble' in the voice. Her expertise lies in the area of taking a voice apart to train or re-train from scratch, in order to teach the singer to strengthen their weaknesses, and free their voice, as opposed to vocal manipulation.

Vocal Technique covers such topics as the voice and how it works, correct vocal placement, vocal registers, and breathing. She states that correct breathing is accomplished when the air flows freely, not squeezed or pushed.

Vocal Technique comes with two CDs. CD one is a series of lessons with guided exercises, illustrations, and tracks for practicing along with. CD two is specifically focused on four vocal exercises, designed to isolate and strengthen the separate registers. Although Dena uses more than 25 different vocal exercises in her practice, for the sake of the book, Dena purposely chose exercises to get the voice flowing. She wanted this book to be simple and easy to understand, as well as educate the beginner, and help each singer begin the path to vocal freedom.

Although this book is excellent for beginners, any vocalist will benefit from Dena's knowledge. If you are having trouble around your break points, Vocal Technique is an excellent book for strengthening the registers and break area. I recommend this book for all vocal enthusiasts.

Much needed book
By Dean Gillis
This is a much needed book. I good modern overview of what you would encounter in the field of radiation protection and dosimetry. The coverage of standards and their development is often missed in other works. Since you will spend a great deal of time referring to these standards knowing the actors and history is important. As someone in the field I would have liked to have seen a little more on international standards development. It was very refreshing to see a text where equations were defined clearly. So many physics books seem to revel in making you figure out that particulars authors flavor of equation definition.
I have found the book to be a great general reference and starting point for those new to the field. It is actually an enjoyable read. And having a joke thrown in once and a while was great.

Excellent, well-written book
By T. Ushino
This is an excellent book for students of radiation protection and dosimetry. It provides a great overview of health physics from radioisotope decay to non-ionizing radiation. The technical content is balanced with good practical examples. I would like to recommend this book for anyone studying health physics or preparing for the certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Clear and accessible
By Steel
As a grad student you are looking for clear and concise instruction for the subject you are learning. I've got experience with a number of technical books in the physics field and this is the most accessible one I've encountered yet. The author lingers over important point and doesn't waste time on derivations when not necessary. Even if you are assigned a different book for a course in Health Physics or Radiation Protection, picking this one up as a reference will serve you well.
