Seeing Systems

Oshry takes a innovative approach for describing complexity. It is unique. By using simple graphics, and narrative explanations the arcane world of organizational systems comes to life.
Seeing Systems strikes a effective balance between pragmatism and theory, with a generous dose of humor. You will finish the book with ideas for breaking down organizational boundaries, liberating the inherent artistry and energy of the workforce. It's and easy and informative read. Loved it.

eye opening psychological perspective

While I don't come from a psychoanalytic bent, Oshry provides very useful constructs for understanding and reflecting on the organization. Seen from a systems perspective he describes inter-relationships of groups as a series of systems, almost as an engineering metaphor. We are not a group of individual psychologies interacting with one another. Each individual is part of some system. The psychological mindset each comes with is affected by the system that person is a part of. While we are set in our mindset, we will think and act differently, depending on the system we are a part of. The system determines our behavior, to an extent. Very useful. Good work to ponder, incorporate, and utilize to effect change.

Great stuff

Before I left the corporate world, I was convinced that often our need to always remain under the reductionist hat severely limits our ability to truly understand a problem as well as secure the future. How many times have you interacted with your organization with other departments who fend only for themselves? Other questions arise that demand systems thinking approach such any policies, general politics even accounting procedures that often take a reductionist view of an organization. This was a great book to start training the eyes to see the forest rather than the tree.
