Manual or Book??

It covers a lot of topics, but feels more like a procedure manual. It seems to have been printed on the cheap; so the combo of cheap paper, light ink, and poorly selected images make the images nearly worthless, if not distracting. All that said, it is a big book that has some value as a reference.

Covers a lot of topics but nothing in depth. A great overview book for beginners with Android Studio 2.3 to get you started. Knowledge is not cheap - if you expect to just copy-and-paste the sample codes into you own App to make it work, you may be greatly disappointed. A wonderful novel that will stay with you

The elegance of this 2002 Pulitzer Prize winning novel can be described best by one of his characters, teenager Tick, who decides "just because things happen slow doesn't mean you'll be ready for them." Miles, the central character of Russo's story, runs the Empire Grill in economically depressed Empire Falls, Maine. He ekes out a life hoping for parity: that his loyalty to the grill and to its wealthy owner Mrs. Whiting will result in his owning the business, that his patience with his daughter Tick will be rewarded with openness, that his soon-to-be-ex wife Janine will find what was lacking in him in her fianc� Walt, that his youthful failure to escape the town will have some redemption. But the complexity of Mrs. Whiting's interest in him remains out of his grasp, and the dynamics of Tick's life are largely hidden from him. Janine has a growing need for exactly what she hated so much about Miles. Worst of all, Miles sees himself as destined to remain a loser who gives and never gets. Russo explores the storylines of all these characters and others, allowing the reader intimate glimpses into their lives. In Empire Falls, relationships between husbands and wives and between parents and children are never simple. Russo's characters suffer in ways that are passionately ordinary - that is, until everything funnels into one explosive, extraordinary moment. I literally had to put the book down to absorb this climatic scene. That this scene was both prepared for and totally shocking speaks to the author's skill.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The characters are lively and sympathetic - even the ones that might be called villains - and despite the quiet nature of the narrative, it is a difficult book to put down.

Patient readers will be rewarded...

I will admit that about halfway through Empire Falls, I put it away for a few days. Although fascinating in its nuance and delightful in its humor, it was beginning to plod (so I thought) and I began to wonder whether it quite deserved the prestiguous prize on its cover.

Little did I realize the expertise of its author. He knows exactly what he's doing, bringing a complex tale to a slow boil. When the fever of rumination breaks toward the end, when something big really does happen, the reader is that much more taken by it because Russo has done more than introduce the characters--he has brought you into their lives, into their heads, and you genuinely care about their fate. Every one of the citizens in Empire Falls is a real, complex, believable person. At least once I had to remind myself that this heartbreaking tale, so vividly funny and genuinely tragic, is a work of fiction.

That Russo teases humor from sadness in such a natural, graceful way would make The Empire Falls a remarkable book. What makes it literature is its relevance, its reality, the fact that it might as well be a true story.

Russo 's Poignant Tale of Small Town Life Is Rewarding Read

This is my first novel by Richard Russo and I was captivated by his ability to breathe life into a diverse group of characters. From protagonist Miles Roby to his irascible father Max, his hauntingly sad mother Grace, his nemesis Mrs. Whiting, his touching daughter Tick, and many more, we are treated to people described so vividly they come to life and seem like the people we might know and want to either hang out with or avoid at all costs if we lived in Empire Falls.
There are too many plot lines to detail, but they all are brought together nicely and no reader is left with unanswered questions thanks to an interesting epilogue.
All the problems of seeking a better life but being relegated to the blue collar life of a mill town whose mill has long closed, are embodied in Miles Roby, reluctant proprietor of the town's grill. In the opening pages he sees his teen-age daughter Tick walking home from school with a hunched back weighed down by her symbolic backpack representing all the problems she faces---the dissolution of her parents marriage, a stepfather she despises, a widening emotional gap with her mother, the dreaded loss of friends and social standing, and being coupled with the school's most tortured and disturbed student.
The story moves slowly but the characters are so richly drawn you will be totally engrossed and hard pressed to put this one down. When the story does reach its climax, there are plenty of shocks and surprises and a realization that life is not perfect and its flaws are with us forever to either cope with or be overwhelmed by.

Julie Livingston is Associate Professor of History at Rutgers University. Dynamite account of Botswana cancer hospital

Anyone interested in medical anthropology can use this thoughtful and observant book. Livingston is the daughter of an oncologist and she states in the introduction: "In the face of many deaths I have witnessed since childhood, I have also questioned oncology's rituals, its liturgy, and the excesses to which blind faith and desperation can lead. . . . [In Botswana] I came to understand that while cancer with oncology was awful, cancer without oncology could be obscene."

She puts the things she observes in the context of rising cancer rates in Africa and general unavailability of treatment, especially given forced-by-IMF privatization and expensive cancer drug patents. In a still-public hospital in Botswana which at least has an ethos of caring and an excellent oncologist, Livingston is, as she realizes, in one of the better possible settings in the environment, but the hospital staff struggles mightily with limited resources, hordes of patients, lack of treatment drugs and palliative drugs, and in general tremendous difficulties. How the patients and the staff manage and conceptualize things is astutely observed.

Yet at the end the book leaves me touched, yes, but also angry about the marginalization of African health care and disease and about the drug patent system, as well as somewhat frustrated at how ephemeral any local gains can be without any sort of steady or rational progress, but grateful for people who are willing to deal with things as best they can regardless of that. And grateful for this fine book.

This is an amazing, fascinating

This is an amazing, fascinating, heart wrenching book. A colleague recommended it to me for a class I'm teaching on Global Health and Development. Since I have tended to focus on general development more than health studies, I got a copy of this and was totally blown away when I read it. Great book for anyone interested in these issues!

Finally found the book I was looking for....

I am a self-learner and have been looking for a book like this and finally found it. I am not done reading the full book yet but really like it so far. I am glad that Dr. Goldberg Decided to write this book. I already mentioned this book on the Physics Forums in order to help others self learners like me with the book.

Good start

This is actually one of the better books I have found so far for knitting petwear. All the patterns are basically two different styles- sweaters and something that looks like a cape with a tab on the underneath. The book has patterns that emerge from either of those basic styles. I would recommend some general knitting experience with this book- the stitches range from basic stockinette to cable, but you probably should have some knitting instructions to understand. There's also patterns for a cute hat and scarf/collar. All are very quicknit even if you only have a couple hours. I finished my first one, a sweater, in 3 hours. My second one took about 4 hours because of the smaller needles. The patterns are for small dogs around 18 inches in body length or shorter.

good - better than other dog knit books

My problem with most dog sweater books is that the sweaters are sooo ugly. In PuppyKnits there are some designs of questionable taste, (and that scarf thing looks painful) but MANY with dignity and class. I love the little cable jacket and the felted coat. I also like that there are 3 basic coat styles, (one that is very good for boy dogs- if you know what I mean) and nothing with sleeves. Personally, I've never seen any dog look good in anything with sleeves.

Eaton seems fixated on one kind of yarn, (manos). Great yarn but she gauges it as worsted and I think its a bulky yarn. I'd use a real worsted instead in the patterns. I did and it worked well.

Pretty Stinkin' Cute...

...that's what the patterns (and models!) in this little book are. I have to preface the technical aspects of my review with a disclaimer here-- I am generally not a fan of pets wearing clothing, my own Jack Russell having heartily given me a "No, MA'AM!" on the subject, but if you MUST...these little numbers are, as stated, pretty stinkin' cute. Now, on to the tech specs: If you possess a basic knowledge of knitting (i.e., cabling, increase/decrease, using double-pointed needles) you're in like Flynn! Plus it's a great way to get rid of those half-used skeins everyone has at the bottom of their yarn basket, as no project requires anywhere near a full 300-yd skein to complete. (If you have a large or even medium-sized dog, however, look for "Big Dog Knits" by the same author; these patterns are strictly for what my family lovingly refers to as "kick-me dogs".) The stripy buttoned-up sweater was literally my first knitting project EVER this past weekend and I had zero trouble whipping it up-- although, as a crocheter who lives for deviously nasty lace motifs, I may have had an advantage over the typical knitting virgin. Even so, this is a good way for the beginning knitter to ease out of Scarfland...if for no other reason that doggie sweaters work up way quicker, and with way less yarn, than their human counterparts!

P.S.--My reasons for knocking off a star: the felted collar thingy, which looks incredibly uncomfortable on that poor little Pug, and the puppy fez. Ruh-DONK, people.
