This is adult fiction. Prudes beware. However it is surprisingly well-written and the dialogue most entertaining. It's worth the price and the fun of reading. It was refreshing to find bits of irony in this novel and a plot with originality and imagination.

I read all sorts of p&p variations chaste and risqu� and this is definitely in the risqu� category. If you enjoy these types of variations then this is well written and enjoyable, with Darcy at his dominant virile best!!!

Another risqu� P&P variation

~~~WARNING: This is NOT a canon P&P variation and if you're a JA purist don't read!!!~~~

That being said, I loved it!! I am not a prude and can enjoy the many intrigued that are to be had. Yes I love my canon-esque P&P stories, but even I need a break to relieve the tension!!

This story starts out with Elizabeth and the Gardiners touring Pemberley, with Elizabeth and Mr Darcy meeting in the gardens. It goes on to showing what would happen if Mr Darcy and Elizabeth allowed passion to slightly rule themselves when then bump into each other at a river on Darcy's land.

I would recommend this story to mature JAFFers only!!!!

About the Author

Kofi Agawu was born in Ghana, West Africa where he received his initial education before studying in the UK and the US. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities in Africa, Europe and the United States. Agawu is a wide-ranging scholar and author of numerous articles and books on musical semiotics, the analysis of music, and West African music, which include Playing with Signs: A Semiotic Interpretation of Classical Music (Princeton University Press, 1991), African Rhythm: A Northern Ewe Perspective, Representing African Music: Postcolonial Notes, Queries, Positions (Routledge, 2003) and Music as Discourse: Semiotic Adventures in Romantic Music (Oxford University Press, 2008). Dr. Agawu is currently a professor of music at Princeton University.

Wonderful!

I bought this book from a yardsale for a dollar, and didn't expect much. I regret that I actually set it at the bottom of my reading list because the moment I started reading it, I was hooked. It's an engrossing, educating and incredibly entertaining rea, rich in period detail. It's one of my favorite pieces of historical fiction.

I highly recommend it, as well as this book's sequel, "The Midwife's Advice."

Wake Up Call

When I read this book, I just couldn't put it down. I felt as though I was a valuable part of her life, throughout this book, and in the follow up book, "The Midwife's Advice." Reading this book provided me with a chance to reaffirm my beliefs, as a woman. The wonderful thing about this story, and in the other books by this author is that you can explore your own life, as the characters unfold. So many things that Hannah and those close to her said, in response to their life's struggles, I have copied into my quotes journal. And now some of their responses are part of my way of being amongst others. You don't have to be a mother, a medical professional, or a woman to get a great deal from this book. It speaks to the human spirit, across the board.

Brilliant writing! Beautiful story!

Though I was intimidated by the length of this book, I am so glad I read it. I immediately fell in love with the writing style, the subject matter and the characters. Midwifery is a hot topic for me and this book was right up my alley.
In addition to the midwifery aspects of the book, there was also plenty of story to go with it. Fleeing from your homeland, living in steerage on a boat, learning the culture of a new country, and so much more. Courter did a wonderful job expressing such a beautiful story. I've yet to read the sequel but it's on my list of things to read this year!

Living When A Loved One Has Died

My husband died at 47 of lung cancer. I went to grief counseling and purchased any book or piece of information I could find to help me through the grieving process. This book, by far, has helped me the most. It was easy to read when my concentration level was at an all- time low. This was written by someone who has obviously been through this experience. I keep several copies of this book on hand to give to friends as the need arises.
This is a book that can be read and re-read many times. It has brought me great peace and comfort over these last 4 years.

Excellent; anyone grieving should have a copy

My mother died unexpectedly two months ago after fracturing her hip. I was her sole caregiver (she had moderate stage Alzheimer's) and even though I was preparing myself for her first being in a nursing home and ultimately her death years down the road, this sudden passing away left me totally empty and void. I didn't know what to feel except that I had let her down somehow. I had always promised her I would take care of her and not let anything bad happen to her. I found myself emotionless with regard to anything except grief. Then I found this book two weeks ago, took it home and read it. This book touches upon every emotion you go through when you grieve. It is not written as a self-help book. It does not tell you what some professionals think you should be doing to continue living in spite of your loss. It is simple. The sentences are short. It tells you that it is alright to feel the way you do. I have kept my book on my coffee table ever since and have picked it up twice already when I was feeling low. I will definitely be giving this book as a gift to friends as the occasion warrants.

An amazing book!

This book is the best book to give to someone who has lost someone they love. I was given this when I lost both my parents and it is now my bible. I have had the honor to speak with Earl Grollman a few times and he is a wonderful man, it is no surprise he wrote such an amazing book. I have recently sent this book to someone who also lost both her parents rather similarly to how I did, and it is already helping her. I couldn't be happier.
