It concludes with a discussion of packaging systems of the final products.

Breath Awareness for Kids

Beautiful book for children to read. There is a real peaceful feeling throughout this book. Love the illustrations. Great introduction to the idea of mindful breathing for children.Every time I read this story...the kids seem to calm down. I also use A Boy and A Bear and Indigo Dreams to take the breathing concept a step further and actually teach the children the mechanics of breathing, I recommend Each Breath a Smile and I recommend teaching kids to breathe correctly. Also try Baby Buddhas for more ideas on how to teach

A new favorite

I was looking for a book to help me introduce concepts of mindfulness and meditation to my 22 month old toddler. This book does so in a simple, lovely way that is perfect for very little ones.

I wasn't sure whether my son would respond to the book, but I was pleasantly surprised (he's a big fan of Elmo, Grover and Ernie). The illustrations are both calming and engaging (lots of little kids for my son to ogle). I read the book slowly so we sometimes don't make it to the end before he jumps up to find another book, but most of the time, he asks me to read it again. I highly recommend it!

A Peaceful, Affirming Read-Aloud

This beautifully simple book is deeply spiritual without being "religious." I have read it aloud in Grades K-3 including Special Education classes, and it always has a calming, reassuring effect on the children (and on me too!). It can be an introduction to quiet imagination/visualization activities or a concluding activity to help relax and focus a group. The book itself can be a kind of meditation exercise, since part of the text suggests breathing and calming the body in gentle, repetitive language. This is an excellent book to have on hand; it may be used regularly with the same group or in one particular lesson. Unique and highly recommended.

About the Author

Robert V. Hogg, Professor Emeritus of Statistics at the University of Iowa since 2001, received his B.A. in mathematics at the University of Illinois and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics, specializing in actuarial sciences and statistics, from the University of Iowa. Known for his gift of humor and his passion for teaching, Hogg has had far-reaching influence in the field of statistics. Throughout his career, Hogg has played a major role in defining statistics as a unique academic field, and he almost literally "wrote the book" on the subject. He has written more than 70 research articles and co-authored four books including �Introduction of Mathematical Statistics, 6th edition, with J. W. McKean and� A.T. Craig,�Applied Statistics for Engineers and Physical Scientists 3rd edtion with J. Ledolter and A Brief Course in Mathematical 1st edition with E.A. Tanis. His texts have become classroom standards used by hundreds of thousands of students.

Among the many awards he has received for distinction in teaching, Hogg has been honored at the national level (the Mathematical Association of America Award for Distinguished Teaching), the state level (the Governor's Science Medal for Teaching), and the university level (Collegiate Teaching Award). His important contributions to statistical research have been acknowledged by his election to fellowship standing in the ASA and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

Elliot Tanis, Professor Emeritus of mathematics at Hope College, received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. Tanis is the co-author of A Brief Course in Mathematical Statistics with R. Hogg and Probability and Statistics: Explorations with MAPLE 2nd edition with Z. Karian. He has authored over 30 publications on statistics and is a past chairman and governor of the Michigan MAA, which presented him with both its Distinguished Teaching and Distinguished Service Awards.� He taught at Hope for 35 years and in 1989 received the HOPE Award (Hope's Outstanding Professor Educator) for his excellence in teaching.� In addition to his academic interests, Dr. Tanis is also an avid tennis player and devoted Hope sports fan.

Awful book, does a terrible job explaining how to solve problems

Examples in the chapters don't explain each step of the solution. They don't provide the reader with an exact problem they're trying to solve. It simply starts with equations, then ends with equations, and doesn't provide the reader any sense of what is going on or why. Had to find an online version of the course, which provided much better explanations of the book and the concepts within.

Confusing book that does not explain things very well

This book is pretty terrible. It is required for my class, so obviously I had to purchase it, but really it does more to confuse that to help. Additionally, I am taking my class online, so it is pretty much solely on me to learn the material myself through the book.

The book does not have very good example problems in comparison with the homework problems you are given. Additionally, the example problems don't even explain solutions very well.

If you are buying this book, it is probably required and there is nothing you can do about it. If not, I suggest you look elsewhere.

but it's more useful for the practice problems than actually learning the material

While it has all the content that it says it does, the author is too wrapped up in giving examples and specific applications of the theorems that he fails to make the theorems and reasoning for them immediately obvious. What he should have done is: X -> Why X works -> example for X. Instead, he goes: Example for X -> an overly short description of X.

You can still learn from it, but it's more useful for the practice problems than actually learning the material.

Greg Pak is an American New York-based film director/comic book writer, known for his work on such books featuring the Hulk such as the character defining classic World War Hulk storyline.

Based in Spain, Emma Rios is building a name for herself as a comic book illustrator. As well as her work on HEXED for BOOM! Studios, she has caught the attention & admiration of Warren Ellis.

She worked on Strange mini-series for her first Marvel project. The author of which, Mark Waid, praises her work and was excited to collaborate with her again after HEXED. She is also a fan of Steve Ditko's early work on Doctor Strange, which Waid claims is evident in her current work. Later, she also worked on an Osborn mini-series.

Must-read for new and long-time fans alike!

Doctor Strange is my favorite super hero of all time and have been anticipating this release for a long time; it most definitely did not disappoint me!

Doctor Strange Season One tells the story of Stephen after he agrees to be taken under the Ancient One's wing and begin his training in the mystic arts. The writing is absolutely brilliant and is done in a way that is accessible to readers that may be new to the character, while also managing to provide a fresh and enthralling tale for long-time readers. The artwork is equally engaging and is filled with brilliant colors and bold lines. Emma Rios really is able to capture the mystical nature of Doctor Strange and his world in her drawings.

I greatly enjoyed this book and hope that this is a sign that Marvel is entertaining the thought of releasing a Doctor Strange individual title.

Okay retelling of the Doc's origin

I avoided Doctor Strange: Season One for a while, because the idea of reading a trendy retelling of the good Doctor's origin story did not appeal to me. I think there's nothing wrong with his 1960s origin story, as told by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Besides, the origin has been retold many times - even in recent years - in comic books, cartoons, etc. So, why revisit this ancient territory yet again?

Fortunately, writer Greg Pak wisely explores some new ground in this volume. Indeed, his script focuses on an obscure time period in the character's history - after Strange decided to become an apprentice to The Ancient One, but before he became a true master of the mystic arts. So while some of this story is familiar, much of it is novel.

But is it any good? That's a tougher question to answer. At its best, Season One does an excellent job of fleshing out Dr. Strange's character. (In a particularly good sequence, Strange helps a fellow physician handle an overwhelming number of hospital patients.) The Ancient One also comes across well, managing to retain some of the original character's mystery and dignity. Less successful is the re-imagining of Doctor Strange's butler Wong as a hostile kung-fu master. Wong is cool but really just a supporting character, and I think he takes up too much oxygen in this version of the story.

I also didn't really care for the action sequences in this book. Every time sometime casts a spell, the whole panel is filled with weird colors and nightmare images. It's very hard to tell what is happening, or who's winning a fight and why. By contrast, the original Doctor Strange comics had very clear action scenes; Mordo would cast a spell, Strange would block it with a shield, and the artwork was simple enough to convey this without making my head hurt. Not so here.

So it's fair to say I had a mixed-to-positive reaction to Season One. The basic story is good (though clearly ripped off from Lord of the Rings, as the characters themselves point out). The characterization and dialogue are hit-and-miss. The artwork is mostly cool, but too confusing during action scenes. And all the attempts to modernize Strange and make him talk in 2000s slang bugged me. Still, I don't want to be a grouch; this is an okay retelling of Strange's origin for the Millennial Generation. They can cherish this version, while I can go on cherishing the dusty old Stan Lee version. :-)

Disappointing

I don't like to write negative reviews, but I have to be honest in my opinion of this work.

This is a re-telling of the traditional "Doctor Strange" origin. Our story picks up as Strange arrives in the sanctuary of the Ancient One, giving us flashbacks into his life before his accident while setting the stage for the 'quest' story to come that will involve him, Wong, and new-comer Sofia di Cosimo of the Museum Of Ancient Mythology in Rome. Our heroes go in search of magic rings that give the wielder command over the Vishanti before evil claims them and destroys the world.

I find the story to be uninformed and not well thought out. This is a 'magic lamp' story: a magical device gives the possessor command over beings of magical power. Traditionally, supernatural beings end up contained because they are evil or broken some commandment. Their punishment is confinement and servitude to whoever has their prison and/or frees them. The main plot of this story involves three rings that give the wearer command over the Vishanti. For those unfamiliar to the "Doctor Strange" mythology, the Vishanti are supernatural beings of great and ancient power who are traditional guardians of good and opposers of evil. Many of the spells Doctor Strange uses in his magical career invoke the power of the Vishanti: he calls on them to help and they choose to do so. So, these are beings of god-like power who assist good magicians in their fight against evil by lending their power to fuel the good magician's spells. Why would there be rings to control them? Who made them? Why would the Vishanti allow them to exist if anyone - good or evil - could pick one up and enslave them? The answer can only be: because the plot needs them to exist.

I did enjoy the character development between Strange and Wong, and their dislike and mistrust of each other in the beginning which gradually becomes good-natured bravado over the course of the story was an interesting take on their relationship.

I know this author has written other stories that were well-received. Perhaps he is not especially knowledgeable about magic and folklore, and merely lacked understanding of this topic.

When I was growing up, my mantra was "make mine Marvel" and Doctor Strange was one of my heroes. His story teaches us that whatever our past, we can work wonders if only we have the will to be better people and the desire to learn. Now I find Marvel stories to be disappointing, and it saddens me to say that this work is - in my opinion - an example of why DC's Vertigo titles, such as "Hellblazer" and "The Sandman," are superior to Marvel's line of titles. "Hellblazer" and "The Sandman" are built on stories that have fully-realised characters living in real worlds of cause, effect, and consequence. It's unfortunate that Marvel seems to rely heavily on plot devices and crossovers rather than good writing.

If you're looking for a good "Doctor Strange" title, I recommend "Doctor Strange: Into Shamballa" by J. M. DeMatteis and Dan Green.

Enjoyable but not a horror tale

Several stories within a story, so this book sometimes feels long. However, the characters are engaging as are the subplots. I would rather have more about the werewolf, but the author treats him just like another character. The book must be read with an understanding that the author's views and style are from the mid 1800's.

There's just not enough werewolf to justify calling it "Wagner the Werewolf". Unlike Dracula, who also remains hidden in much of his tale, Wagner does not leave a menacing presence when away. With the exception of the surprisingly sympathetic portrayal of a Jewish moneylender the characters are not really people the reader can like, Wagner himself made a deal with Satan's slave to regain his youth, the woman he loves murdered an imagined rival and had her brother's love turned over to a convent straight out of Lewis' "The Monk", there are also assorted thieves, liars and opportunists throughout. Despite the flaws it is a fairly quick read and is far from deserving to be called a "penny dreadful".

A fabulous Gothic novel that deserves far more recognition than it has received. Not only is there a werewolf, but Faust and Christian Rosencreutz, founder of the Rosicrucians, makes an appearance. This book is a significant document in the history of Gothic fiction and provides a bridge from the Rosicrucian novel and the Gothic origins to later works like Dracula. If I ever update my book The Gothic Wanderer, I will include a chapter on it.
