Eastwood's "Oxford Guide to English Grammar" takes a more functional approach to grammar than some books. It is a good book to use in conjunction with some others, such as Practical English Usage: Hardcover.

The chapters that Eastwood breaks his book into are as follows:

1. Sentence and Text

2. Verb Forms

3. Infinitive, Gerund and Participles

4. The Noun Phrase

5. Adjectives, Adverbs and Prepositions

6. Main clauses and Sub-clauses

7. Word Forms

Each section is fairly extensive and gives a good deal of information for most teaching purposes in the language classroom. They have a huge range of topics within each including articles, quantifiers, adverbial clauses, conditional clauses and the list goes on and on. The examples given are well-chosen, though these sub-sections seem to lack some of the extensiveness that other books suffer from. However, I think it is more than enough for most practical purposes.

It is a great book and a fantastic resource for teachers. With the minimum price being about $58, (at the time of this review), I would wonder if the price is worth it. One would have to consider that. It is a very good book, but I would not pay that price myself.

Good text.

As an RRT of 7 years, I needed a good, updated text book as I took over a clinical position that requires PFT's on the neuromuscular patient group I work with as the physicians did not understand the role of an RT in the ALS clinic. (Neurologist really do not understand pulmonology.) This text book has allowed me to show them the basics of PFT's and how they relate to the patient population group so that we no longer have delay of care issues. Plus, I need it helps for my own personal review.

Depressing textbook

As a second year RT student, this was the most awful book I have ever had in my course of studies. It is obviously written in English, but made me feel like it was written completely in Chinese. It is a difficult read & nothing made much sense to me at all. My professor also said that this is her least favorite book as well. Best of luck to those who are required to purchase it.

About the Author
Reece has an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College.

Michael L. Cain taught introductory biology and a broad range of other biology courses at New Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for thirteen years. He is now writing full time and is affiliated with Bowdoin College in Maine. Dr. Cain has published dozens of scientific articles on topics such as genetic variation in plants, insect foraging behavior, long-distance seed dispersal, and factors that promote speciation in crickets. Dr. Cain is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Pew Charitable Trust Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Campbell Biology

I'm a middle-aged computational linguist, and I bought this book after a fascinating conversation with my doctor about the advances made in biology in recent years due primarily to cancer and AIDS research. I want to learn important things that mankind has understood before I have to leave the planet. I thought I was going to have to pull myself together to read this heavy stuff, but not at all. For me, this is a page turner. I couldn't wait for my commute so I could sit in a corner and read my book. I have to say I am left totally BLOWN AWAY by what we have come to understand about biology -- both the details as well as the bigger picture

Had I been younger when I picked it up, I would not have appreciated as much the skill with which the authors present the material. The order and manner in which concepts are introduced have obviously been honed over decades of experience -- first the major themes which tie the field together, a complete and painless high school chemistry course placed so you sense why you're going to need it, the critical role that water plays in making life possible. An overarching description of what energy is and how it functions precedes an attempt to discuss cellular respiration and photosynthesis, so that you're primed not to lose the forest for the trees. You really feel like you sense how it works, and if you're paying attention at all, you can't help but come away with admiration for the community of scientists who made it happen. I feel better about the human race, and am left sensing the magnificence of this achievement in the greater scheme of things. The whole of biology is presented pretty comprehensively. I left the book feeling that I got what I came for.

But oddly the biggest thing I take away from this book is a deep impression of the astounding machine that I have been given to use in this life. You can't help waking up each morning hoping to be worthy of it.

Same as Campbell w/o Masteringbiology

This textbook is the same book as the *more expensive* Campbell Biology, also being sold on amazon... The difference is that you also get access to Masteringbiology, which is about 50 bucks on their website. This is obviously the better deal. Anyway, the book arrived brand new and vacuum-sealed with plastic (2 Layers!). Perfect condition. Aside from that, the book is very nice. There are many pictures and diagrams and the text is easy to read, unlike some other textbooks I am required to read... I have already outlined the first few chapters and I am very happy with the purchase, because it is a good textbook, it is much cheaper than my college bookstore, and it included Masteringbiology in the price.

Edit: Just wanted to add that on the Masteringbiology website, you also get access to the Campbell Biology E-book (normally $100 on their website with the mastering), so you don't have to carry the book with you to school for access. I just have to stress how great this E-book is, really. I normally don't love reading books on my iPad with the kindle app; it just doesn't feel the same. But I read this textbook my iPad using the Pearson app and it is fantastic. It looks exactly like the book and you have the option of leaving sticky notes and highlighting things for later. Oh and reading the book is generally online, but you can choose the chapters you want to download for reading offline. I hardly even use the printed textbook these days.

Basic Bible for Biologist

This edition is more detailed than 9th edition. I love the stuff that they added and revised, such as better pictures and improved examples. The 7th and 9th edition are adequate enough to learn basic biology, but keeping updated with new editions is wise.

Firstly, there are pros and cons for the hardcover and three-ring binder options...

Hardcover: Pro: the whole thing is in one whole piece. Con: the hard cover option is REALLY HEAVY to carry around!

Three-ring binder option: Pro: student can customize how they can segment the chapters by putting the pages in a three-ring binder, so they are not carrying around to much weight of the other chapters. Con: the pages are flimsy and can be torn out of the three-ring binder, if you do not handle the pages with care. also, you have to buy your own three-ring binders to put the pages in before you open the plastic, which is securing your new book.

So, if you are a guy like me, who can carry extra weight and likes all the pages secured together, you should buy the hardcover. If you are going to buy the hardcover, you will be reading it in front of a desk.
However, if you are someone who cant hold up heavy books while reading on the couch (or non-desk), you should buy the three-ring binder option.

a gem in the rough

I've read all of the books in Gingery's series, and I give the same review to all of them:
An amazing testament to one man's creativity and hard work, and an inspiration to other budding machinists and tinkerers. The instructions are relatively easy to follow, but be aware that the production values (lay out, graphics, editting) are quite rough.

Good book, dividing head is a useful tool

This, like the remainder of the series, is a good book on building the particular items. It gives step by step detail on building the accessories and requires no specialized tools that you can't make yourself. It does use the some of the tools from the previous books, as the series is meant to be done in order. Probably the most useful item is the dividing head. If you have built the Gingery lathe, there are several useful items for that, including a four jaw chuck and change gears. As with the remainder of the Gingery books, it gives step by step details on both construction and techniques for building the mill, and gives you’re mind some stimulation in the design and building departments. You can do a web search and find examples of these accessories built and operating. There is also a Yahoo Group devoted to the Gingery machines if you need further inspiration.

Interesting and well written book. I would liked to have had a larger size book so that the drawings could have been larger for easier reading. Book had a lot of information on the uses.

David's writings are easy to comprehed and upto the task of building the Dividing Head and Accessories.

About the Author

J. C. Das is a Staff Consultant on Electrical Power Systems with AMEC Inc., in Tucker, Georgia. He is Life Fellow of IEEE (UK), Fellow of IET (India), and has authored approximately sixty technical papers and published 190 study reports of real-world power systems. He is the author of two other books, Power System Analysis: Short-Circuit Load Flow and Harmonics, Second Edition, and Transients in Electrical Systems: Analysis, Recognition, and Mitigation. He is a registered P.E. in the states of Georgia and Oklahoma, C.Eng. in UK, and Eur Ing in Europe. J. C. Das is also a member of CIGRE, Federation of European Engineers, and other technical associations and organizations.

You will be short-changed

Presumably the reason why somebody would want to buy this book is to learn more about arc flash. Well, to be brief, you're not going to! This book is a real ripoff. It's a long enough book, but there's just not enough on this topic, and the rest is filler. Short circuit calculations, protective relaying, insulation coordination, etc. etc. are all important and useful EE topics, but they are not arc flash hazard or arc flash PPE. The book is some 614 pages long. One 39-page long chapter deals with arc flash hazards. Personal protective equipment (PPE) gets no chapter at all and is not even listed in the index in any context. The rest of the book is EE information you can pick up from dozens of good textbooks. What was the publisher thinking about in publishing this book??

If you need to have information on arc flash hazards or PPE for arc flash safety purposes, buy yourself a copy of NFPA 70E or IEEE 1584 standards. Both these books actually have information you need and can use. Das's book does not; it's pathetic.

The author writes well and is knowledgeable, so why the publishers did not make him stick to the topic is incomprehensible. One answer, of course, is that the situation with regards to technical editors at the publishing houses is often not good. There's a flood of proposed book topics, and the assigned editors all too often lack the technical expertise to judge the goodness of the submission. What's even worse (as I can attest from my experience in other cases), is that the editor will send out the proposed manuscript to outside reviewers, get very negative feedback, ignore it, and just publish what they should not have published.

Premier Arc Flash analysis and mitigation refrence Book.

This book is one of its kinds and there is no other parallel book in the market. I have found it very useful to understand arc flash hazard, a subject much confused in the recent times.

The book provides practical ideas of limiting the arc flash hazard with innovations in system designs and protections and speaks of the immense experience of the author on this subject.

Being heavily involved in industrial power distribution systems, I found it a state of the art book, with many case studies and calculations of arc flash hazard in a number of practical system configurations. The refrence had very useful data, discussions and technical information on the innovations going on in the industry, like zone interlocking, coordination of protective devices instantaneous basis, microprocessor based technologies applied to protective relays, arc flash detection systems and the like.

The chapters on arc flash hazard calculations on dc systems is interesting--I believe there is no equivalent research work done in this aspect and also the last chapter 16 on application of Ethernet and IEC 61850 communications for pooling the vast data.

I agree with the comments of Lanny Floyd, Fellow of IEEE, who is nationally and internationally known expert in safety. In his Foreword to the book he writes: "J.C. Das has researched this body of knowledge and brought together innovative ideas and practical concepts with abundant references and real world case studies in arc flash analysis and mitigation.

For the first time, design engineers, facility managers, safety professionals and operating and maintenance personnel have a common comprehensive reference for prevention methods." I absolutely recommend this book to anyone engaged in arc flash hazard analyses and mitigation.

This book is a good book for electrical,fire and protection engineers.It is easy to understand for calculation of ARC Flash fault current and setting the protective relays.It is written by an author that he has over more experience in Power Systems.It has explained detailed beginning of ARC flash calculation,involving Standards,the protective relays settings and co-ordination until trends of the protective relays.
