A beautiful struggle

This is a very rich guide to the ruins of Pompeii. The author is, without doubt, a scholar of distinction. The reconstructive drawings are second to none. The layout of the book is beautiful. However, as an introduction to the subject, the book is a struggle. The writing is often turgid, burdened with unnecessary archaeological terminology: The hip bone is connected to the peristyle, the peristyle is connected to the pronaos, the pronaos is connected to the portico, the chalcidicum is connected to the knee bone.... The glossary at the end of the book is hopelessly inadequate - a mere afterthought. The publishers would do well to study the DK Pulishing model and invest the book with a few introductory pages explaining the vast terminology employed throughout the work with architectural diagrams and arrows. It might then be a masterpiece.

Loving What Is

I first heard about Khalil's inspirational story on the Rich Roll podcast and I was compelled to learn more about his story because he emanates an incredible peace and calm. In particular, I was moved by his ability to forgive the people in his childhood who had caused the traumas which ended up pushing him toward a reckless life of drug addiction. His acceptance/surrender of his past allowed me to start moving toward my own journey of forgiveness and self-acceptance. His book can be deeply healing for anyone because its underlying themes of unmet childhood needs, trauma, self-acceptance, redemption, friendship and finding significance are universal. The fact his life is particularly fascinating being under the employ of multiple celebrities, the depths of drug addiction and finding a life of purpose, service and love. Without spoiling the book, the amount of serendipity in this story is incredible and beautiful, and redemptive.

Powerful

This is probably one of the best addiction books I have ever read (and I have read hundreds of them!) I myself have been in recovery for 4 years. I was a raging alcoholic and I have 2 nephews (ages 20 and 23) who are addicted to meth and heroin and are both sitting in prison at this very moment. That is the very reason I chose to read this book....I wanted to gain more insight on what fuels a heroin addict. My family has been torn apart for many years, thanks to addiction. I only pray that once my nephews are out of prison, they will see the light just as Khalil did.

A really yummy quick read. The story is great, even if the beginning is a little rushed. There were also moments in the first part of the story where things were slightly unclear.

Kind of a thin story-line, but what do you expect in such a short time. Loads of hot and heavy steam!! Oh girl, have the cold shower ready! Plenty of menage fun. Really smexy read!! Like almost a hardcore read.

I enjoyed the characters and what story was there, I am very interested in seeing where this series is headed. Dragons are not my fav shifters but these guys definitely stoked the fires!

This juicy little story was very hot!

Annie has had a bad experience in the past. She was attacked walking home from a night class and due to that incident, she has become weary of men she doesn't know. After she finished her semester at school, she moved back home and started volunteering at an animal shelter. There, she begins taking care of two baby dragons that were found. Soon, they become like her pets & her attachment to them starts to grow. Not only that, but she feels safe & protected around her dragons. When they've grown too big for her family's yard, she is told by her parents that she needs to get rid of them. Without the heart to do so, she decides to move and buy a ranch so the dragons can stay with her. What Annie doesn't know is that her dragons are actually shape shifters and she is in for a steamy surprise . Brand and Tine has found their mate and they're wasting no time in claiming her for their own.

Dragon's Mate was a fast, fun and smokin' hot erotic romance that will have you smiling one minute and fanning yourself the next. This is a M/F/M (menage) story, but it does also contain bits of M/M/F interactions as well. Being approximately 41 pages, Dragon's Mate made for an easy & light read. It is a fun erotic novella that will surely satisfy your need if you're looking for a hot quickie. Just make sure to have a ice cold drink near when you read or a fire extinguisher for your ereader in case it goes up in flames. Don't say I didn't warn you ;)

I love dragon shifters so I thought I would give this book a try. The beginning started off decent with a little into Annie's background and that she has some PTSD from a previous traumatic attack. Dragons are real and considered exotic animals. Annie adopts two abused dragons and bought land enough for them to live on happily.

Then it starts getting a little creepy. Annie thinks she has a dream with some hot sex, turns out the dragons are really shifters and the reveal their human selves as Annie is swimming naked. Then they have sex with her and Annie just goes right along with it like there's nothing wrong with what just happened. The sex scenes were very graphic bordering on vulgar. It made me nauseous and I ended up having to skip over those parts. It was hot, raunchy sex through the entire book. While some people might enjoy this, I was not one of them.

Nick Corcodilos, the author of 'Ask the Headhunter', has taken job hunting to the next level!
Maybe I'm totally naive when it comes to job hunting (well, at least not anymore), but this book changed my entire mindset on the conventional methods of seeking employment. To cut directly to the chase....
THE NEGATIVES:
* Some of his writings get really redundant. He's trying to drive home a point, but too excessive.
* His method could leave you spending weeks if not months preparing and researching information just for one company; Especially, if you are changing careers or a recent college graduate seeking employment in an industry you're totally unfamiliar with.
THE POSITIVES:
* Easy to read. I like that!
* Will this book help you get the job you are seeking? - Without reservation nor hesitation, if you follow the method Nick has outlined, your probability of success is greatly enhanced. The real question is 'how could you not?' (beware of personnel jockeys)
* The 'added-value' to this book where the others leave off is simply the difference between SHOW & TELL in your 3rd grade elementary class (showing was always more interesting, huh?) Where the other books will TELL you how to get the job, Nick will SHOW you how to DEMONSTRATE your abilities to DO THE JOB in the interview.

not for everyone -- and that's what makes it so good

Nick Corcodilos runs a website called "Ask the Headhunter." I have never encountered so much valuable advice dispensed without a fee.
In this book, Nick explains why the traditional job hunt almost never works. Then he outlines an absolutely brilliant method of breaking away from the Human Resources machine and separating yourself from the herd of "cows" looking for jobs.
Best of all, almost nobody is going to do it! It is far too different and requires too much work for most people. Which means the few of us who follow his advice have that much more of an advantage.
Old way: Scan the help wanted ads, the internet job sites, register with a recruiting agency. Send out dozens, maybe hundreds, of resumes. All of which gets you into the Personnel Department, where people who do not understand the work you do scan through a checklist and try to find reasons to disqualify you. Even when you find a job that fits you perfectly, now you are one of perhaps a hundred would-be applicants.
Nick's way: Do some in-depth research to discover the companies you'd like to work for. (His advice: "Don't look for a job, look for a company.") Then ask yourself how you might become an "insider." Do you know anybody who works there? Can you find out who their customers are? Their vendors? He offers various ways of getting an inside track to speak directly to the person you would be working for -- not someone in Human Resources. Then when you meet, do the job right then and there! Show them how you work, how you think.
I read this book last week, and followed its suggestions: I did a good deal of research on target companies over the weekend, arranged a personal referral to the hiring manager (not the personnel department) of one of them, and have an appointment scheduled for next Thursday. Having done my homework, I already know what probelms the company is facing. When I get there, I'm going to steer the conversation toward that issue, and start working on that problem right then and there.
To this point, I am further along toward a job I really want with a company I REALLY want than I ever would have been the old way. All because of this book.

Job Hunting or Hiring: A Must Read!

As a Recruitment Professional, I can honestly say that this is the best guide for finding and getting the right job that I have ever read. Nick Corcodilos obviously knows his business and shares with the reader what hiring authorities really want from job candidates and what they are willing to give in return to the well-prepared and knowledgeable candidate. From personal experience, I received an offer of $15,000 more than I was expecting just by using the book's techniques. As a Recruitment Specialist for many years, I thought I knew it all, but even I learned some effective new techniques for getting the right job from this book. If you are job seeking, buying this book will be the best investment in your career that you could make!

Peter Kettil, a wood preservation specialist struggling to establish his own business, joins an expedition to the Antarctic in search of an ancient frigate whose frozen remains were spotted by glaciologist Charles Sunderby just before his plane crashed in the ice. Moving forces behind the trek are the dead man's widow, Iris, and Iain Ward, a mysterious Scotsman who agrees to provide financing if he can accompany the crew. Unsettling questions arise about the possible connection of Argentina's desaparecidos to the hunt for the frigate and about two men who exhibit deep interest in the widow. Increasingly frustrated by his inability to solve these riddles and to discover the motivations of his companions, Kettil finally learns the ghastly truth during a most unexpected confrontation in the icy depths of the rediscovered vehicle. Atmospheric settings rendered with striking verisimilitude contribute substantially to the story's appeal.

The grand master of the deep-water thriller (Medusa, 1988, etc.) sails to coldest Chile, Tierra del Fuego, and antarctic points beyond to pick at the old sores and hidden horrors of Argentina's shameful politics. The job prospects for youngish Peter Kettil are not good. Declared redundant by the conglomerate that has bought out the ancient East Anglian firm for which he worked, Kettil, a fine sailor and an expert in the arcana of wood preservation, sees nothing for it but to become a consultant. His very first job is a doozy: He's summoned to the naval museum at Greenwich to meet with glamorous South American widow Iris Sunderby and Iain Ward, a blustering Scotsman who wants to apply his recent wealth to the search for an icebound 19th-century sailing ship discovered in Antarctica by the late Mr. Sunderby. The museum would like Peter's opinion on the ship's condition. Peter hires on, but the apparent murder of beautiful Iris by her hotheaded ``cousin,'' an Argentine student adrift in London, seems to doom the expedition. Mr. Ward, however, insists that Peter accompany him to Peru, where, after a hair-raising trek through the coastal desert and the maritime Andes, they find Mrs. Sunderby alive and in the clutches of a villain who has been enjoying her drugged favors and who may be her brother. Once rescued, Iris is still eager to fit out the motor sailboat for which the increasingly mysterious Mr. Ward has plunked down cash. The search will be anything but straightforward. The murderous student from London is not only in town but is eager to sign on the crew. And he and Iris are terribly interested in the kidnapper from Peru who has decamped to the Straits of Magellan, where he too plans to join the search. Located after some rather heroic seamanship, the mystery ship yields up its dreadful secrets and Iris's family tree is untangled. A sensational cruise. Innes knows sailing as well as anybody writing and manages to make being soaked and frozen in the Straits of Magellan attractive. Directionless first half and weak characters redeemed by strong conclusion

Ship timber specialist Peter Kettil swaps cruising around East Anglia for an extended journey into the gale-ridden waters of the Antarctic in this intruging but inconsistent Hammond Innes thriller. Kettil is drawn into an expedition to locate and recover an ancient ship trapped in the southern ice-pack, spotted by aerial surveyor Charles Sunderby moments before he is killed in a plane crash. Sunderby's widow, Iris, bankrolled by mysterious "pools winner" Ian Ward, is determined to find the ship for both its historical interest and to prove her husband was right. But who is Iris, and what are her true motives? Do her enigmatic South American relatives hold the answer? Does the ship have any connection to the Argentinian Disappeared political prisoners? And who or what is Ian Ward, who has come into millions in a pools win nobody can find evidence of?

It's a solid basis for an Innes thriller, and he has pulled off these sorts of stories brilliantly many times. But 'Isvik' has its fair share of problems, and despite an excellent ending, the book does not stack up well against his best work.

The problems are twofold:

Firstly, the characterisation. While most of Hammond Innes' books feature an "everyman" protagonist through whose eyes we observe more interesting characters, Innes takes that element to the extreme here. Peter Kettil is a very weak and colourless narrator, and his main purpose is to constantly ask questions that are never answered. Despite expressing reservations about the trip and its purpose, he never stands up for himself, being content to just drift along with the journey. Ian Ward is similar; there are implications that he is everything from a government agent to an arms runner, but very little of his character is revealed. He's supposed to be shadowy and mysterious, but comes across as stubborn and abrasive, demanding instant decisions and answers from everyone else while never answering questions himself. He clearly knows more than he's letting on, but how much he knows, and what his true purpose is, is never really explained. Iris Sunderby is at different times a strong no-nonsense busineesswoman and a drug-taking flaky girl who sleeps with her relatives to gain information. At least Angel Connor-Gomez is consistent, being a clear antagonist with few redeeming features beyond his superficial charm.

Secondly, the story takes a long time to kick into gear. I know that Innes' books have always been more about the journey than the destination, but the first half of 'Isvik' doesn't go anywhere. There is some character insight into Iris and Angel, and some background to the Disappeareds, but the constant back-and-forth argument over the Connor-Gomez family tree adds nothing to the story. Unlike 'Solomons Seal', say, the exact relation of Angel, Carlos, Eduardo and Iris to each other has no direct relevance to the plot, and too much of the first half is bogged down in these roundabout discussions. The book does pick up significantly once the characters are on board the ship and begin sailing, but this is only in the last 100 pages of the book.

One thing I will say, the conclusion of 'Isvik' is outstanding, providing a horrifying but plausible answer to the questions raised throughout the book. Fans of earlier Innes books such as 'Maddon's Rock' and 'The White South' will find plenty to love here, with familiar elements such as a long trek over the ice and the abandoned ship locked in a frozen wasteland. It's a pity the earlier parts of the book couldn't provide a better build up to one of Innes' best ever climaxes.

The second half thankfully redeems 'Isvik' from what is a pretty lacklustre beginning. Fifty years after his first books, it does seem that Innes was less able to pull together his complex, interlocking, personality-driven stories like he was in the past. But the payoff in 'Isvik' is (mostly) worth it, so I would still recommend it to those Innes fans who can overlook a few flaws in their hero's style.

Why was this made into audio book

I can't imagine why anyone would publish this book in audio format. The story is told in first person and the character telling the story is an incredible whiner. The narrator makes a worthy effort at trying to put some spine into his voice but the author has created a spineless, insecure, overweight character who snivels throughout the book. What was Hammond Innes thinking?

I did things a bit backward when I read Amazons of Bluebelle Valley Volume II first, but I enjoyed it so much I just had to backtrack and read Volume I.

R. B. Greenfield did not disappoint. Sensual, sexual and deliciously explicit, this is now officially my guilty pleasure! I love how each sotry stands alone but is tied together by the characters. Each story takes you deeper into the fantasy land of Bluebelle Valley. Greenfield delivers on the fun erotica with the playful romps that Richie goes on.

An erotic novel that is clever, super sexy and humorous is hard to find and Greenfield hits it out of the park. These stories have the interesting ability to make me smile while getting me excited, the perfect naughty nooner!

I'm ready to dive into the next book from R.B. Greenfield! Highly recommend!

Hugely disappointing, pun intended. Contrary to how it's being marketed, this isn't a "giantess" or a "giant woman tiny man" book. Doesn't even come close to meeting that definition. A four foot two man (the height of the main character) isn't even really a dwarf or a tiny man, just a very short but otherwise normal sized man. Very limited plot potential. I lost interest after just two pages. Read The Inheritance, The Inheritance 2, and The Greatest Harem to see what's truly possible with this genre. Skip this limited appeal fluff piece.
