About the Author

David Feldman joined the faculty at College of the Atlantic in 1998, having completed a PhD in Physics at the University of California. He served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2003 - 2007. At COA Feldman has taught over twenty different courses in physics, mathematics, and computer science.

Feldman's research interests lie in the fields of statistical mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. In his research, he uses both analytic and computational techniques. Feldman has authored research papers in journals including Physical Review E, Chaos, and Advances in Complex Systems. He has recently begun a research project looking at trends in extreme precipitation events in Maine.

This is the most basic place do start studying Chaos and Fractals: From high algebra to Differential Equations.

Ive read a bunch of Chaos and Fractals books, and this one is really the basic place to start Chaos and Fractals math. And now with Prof Feldman's online course (Complexity Explorer website) theres really no excuse to learn the subject anymore :). Very well done Prof. Feldman!. This is a great book and I really felt envy of Prof Feldman Students.

Other book I really liked is Flake's Computational Beauty of Nature which you can read in parallel or after this one.

I have read many books on the subject. This one is the best. The author goes out of his way to explain things clearly. No matter how complex the topic, he does a great job explaining it with both words and graphics.

A must have

So I was fortunate enough to take David Feldman's MOOC through the Santa Fe Institute on dynamical systems. He was just amazing in the course, one of the most likeable teachers I have ever had. Dynamical systems (chaos and fractals are part of that, sort of, kind of), are not trivial to understand. Yet Dr. Feldman is such a master teacher that he makes it look easy and interesting, very interesting. The good news is that he writes like he teaches. This book gets into far more detail than the more popular titles by Gleik and others. It is not a tome like the ones targeted at math geniuses either. It is right in the middle, not too much, not too little, but just right. The middle bear of chaos. Feldman is as patient a writer as he is a teacher and will repeat himself in a masterful way to ensure you get the concept. He writing is approachable, just like he is. He is wicked smart, but does not need to rub it in your face. And he does not.

The book is broad in its aim to give you a complete overview of chaos and fractals (dynamical systems) along with the math, but in a way that anyone can get it. This is a must have. His MOOC is a must take and he is a gift to the world of students. He is that rare teacher you never forget and always appreciate and his book is the same.

Good enough overview

The Cliffs Quick Review serves as an outline, overview, and collection of general information that you might encounter in an Intro/General Psychology class. Other such discipline overviews, such as the Dummies guide, aren't as scholastic, and tend to cater more to Pop Psychology - or people who want to find answers to what's wrong with them.
It covers the basics of:
-Research Methods, Behavioral, sensation, perception, consciousness, learning, motivation, emotions, stress and health, Developmental, Personality, Abnormal, treatments, Social, intelligence, memory, Cognitive, language, and diversity; and a brief (useless) statistics section.
It would have been more useful if it delved specifically into the subdisciplines (noticeably lacking are Industrial/Org, Psychiatry, Educational.. Also, in some places, all information isn't given, but rather a representative sample of information in that category. In favor of brevity, it lacks concrete examples.

Wow! Charlene Hartnady delights her readers again with another exhilarating adventure in Stolen by the Alpha Wolf Bundle, a sub-series and second release in her incredibly popular The Chosen Series. I love it! Originally, this story was released in three separate installments, Accidental Theft, Deliberate Theft and Determined Theft but has now been combined into one convenient compilation of all three. It's my opinion that this story can be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend reading the first book of The Chosen series, Chosen by the Vampire Kings. Charlene has dazzled us yet again with her amazing talent, astounding imagination and incredible skill, and given her readers a delicious masterpiece of paranormal fantasy, adventure, suspense and romance. Be still my heart! The story is exciting, powerful, action packed, original, compelling, thrilling, riveting, funny, heart wrenching, romantic, heartwarming, arousing, sensual, steamy and hot! The dialog is smart, witty, funny, well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are fascinating, captivating, enticing, endearing, engaging, sexy as sin and sometimes, down right hilarious. They jump right off the page, capture your heart, grab your imagination, make you cry and tickle your funny bone!
The wolves have launched an attack against the Vampire Kings, unsuccessfully trying to capture their human Queen. Instead, female vampire Stephany is captured but what in claws name is Ward, the wolf Alpha, supposed to do with a female bloodsucker? They are a different species and mortal enemies. He certainly can't allow her to learn their location or their secrets! But the female vampire is so beautiful and so enticing with gorgeous blonde hair, beguiling blue eyes and incredible long legs. Nope, he can't go there! Can't think about how sexy and beautiful she is! So not going to happen! Or is it? He just has to protect her from his pack until he can get her safely back to her coven. But Ward quickly discovers that his body didn't get the hands off memo! And sadly for the two unlikely lovers, their time together must come to an end and Stephany must return to her coven and her Kings. Excellent!

Ward & Stephany never got over their 1st encounter with each other & when she finds out that she's pregnant she's torn by wanting to have the baby &/or getting an abortion (because most female vampires have to narrow of a pelvis to give birth & they can't have a C-section because they heal to fast). Ward changes her mind about the abortion when he comes back for her & Tanya helps them escape. While with Ward in his hideout she learns that shifters have smaller babies & that some of their lores are untrue (like the fact t that Stephany & Lance are mated; even though she's not in love with him). When it's time for her to have the baby they go back to Sweetwater (the closest town) to find Becky to induce the labor; in the meantime Lance who has been waiting for the phone that Tanya gave them to get used so that he can figure out where they are & come & forcibly take Stephany back (as he's under the impression that he actually wants her from his near death experience). Lance informs Zane & Brant where they are & Zane & Brant go to get them; but they had thought that Lance had obeyed them & stayed behind but he didn't & it doesn't go as they planned. As this is a HEA story, I'm not telling you what happens next only that both Ward, Stephany, Becky & everyone else gets a surprise.

Awesome and Worthy of Rereading Several Times

This was the first set of books that I read by Charlene and I feel in love with all of the characters. I still have yet to read the preceding series because I don't particularly like the vampire kings even though they have shown some improvement in later books. As an introduction to the world that Charlene created in all of her series I think this was best. I love the shifters and wish there were more stories involving them. I love the vampires too but they've been the main focus for a while now.

This set still remains my favorite of Charlene's. I've read it a few times since I first read it a couple of months ago. The characters are strong and well developed. Best of all I don't want to kill the female lead. There's so many stories out there where I cringe at the female lead for their stupidity. Charlene's women tend to be very well written. There's only been a few that I didn't like which for me is a compliment. :)

Frustratingly awesome!

As is my custom, I'm not telling about the book but I will say more than usual: Seeing "Sam" in a lower state and all that it entails is amazingly frustrating. I kept putting the book down in some of the more difficult (for her) places. The end was something of a surprise but not really. The last part of the book, I wanted to quit reading and just get book 6 but I was afraid I would miss something important... and I would have.

Bottom line: This is another in a great series. I need to read something else before I start book 6 but I doubt if I can make it. Awesome does not describe it.

Good, could be even better

The information and the way it is delivered are excellent, except for one most annoying problem: There are cover to cover acronyms and, unless one is reading from cover to cover, one is bound to come up against an acronym which means nothing to one! (And so, presumably, to one or two, or more, others). The book is heavy (pounds weight) but would more expansive elucidation of these abbreviations be a waste of resources? If so, a glossary of these time wasting distractions needs to be appended.

Great Emergency Medicine Textbook

I have found this book excellent to use. It is a pretty compact book covering most areas of emergency medicine in less than 1000 pages. The only downside is that sometimes due to this the finer details are missing.... but i guess that's what those big thick reference texts are for. Also it's written by members of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine so it's great for studying for ACEM exams.

Poor binding

Very good book for studying and easy to read.
But the binding is very poor and pages keep coming off as you read.
May be the binding should be similar to their paediatric version of emergency medicine.
Most of the pages in my book are flying around now and some of them are stapled..........

Enjoyable but not classic

It's really a fun book to read. The illustrations aren't by Seuss so I'm assuming this is probably one he'd never intended to publish. But it's out there now. And you've got your 1 star reviewers up in arms because the kid gets to stay in bed. OH NO! (Screams the logical person) a kid gets to sleep in? How terrible.
I read a review by a "working parent" (congratulations on being a part of the group known as everybody) who was so upset that it seems this book will derail her whole life. I think a little good parenting would prevent that. Plus, as a working parent it's kinda nice when the kids want to sleep in. It gives you a little down time. Was it the best Seuss book? No. Was it fun? Yes. Was it illustrated by Seuss? No. 3 stars.

Teach instead of punish

I'm not sure if there are any other books that really introduce the positive discipline idea of a "time in". This does it very well and gets kids interested in making their own space. If you can teach them to go off and calm down on their own then it will be WAY better than trying to force them to do a traditional time-out.

Very useful

I have used the Making Out In ... series before for Mandarin and Korean and purchased this one for a friend who was interested in Japanese culture. It was entertaining enough that my friend picked up many useful phrases pretty easily. This is not the best learning tool but it bridges the gap between a stodgy scripted material and something more entertaining and fun to learn.

If you are not familiar with this series you should be warned that this does contain foul language.

Buy this as a supplement to your Japanese studies!

Good for a good laugh

I bought the Arabic version a few years back and thought it was hilarious so when my daughter got stationed in Okinawa, I bought her this book. Her Japanese coworkers have perused and said it isn't that far off, although they highly recommended that, as a woman, some of the phrases are not recommended.

Adorable!!

I love children's books by Bill Martin and Eric Carle. I really love reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" to my preschoolers and when I heard there was a new book, I had to find a copy and buy it. I can't wait to read this book to my class along with the other two books. It is soooo adorable! The pictures are cute and easy for the children to remember.

Great Companion to a Classic

This book is similar to the original Brown Bear book, with illustrations of panda bear, bald eagle, water buffalo, spider monkey, green sea turtle, macaroni penguin, sea lion, red wolf, whooping crane, black panther, and moon-faced dreaming child.

The illustrations are beautiful--Carle's signature watercolor-collage style. While Brown Bear's illustrations show each animal against stark white backgrounds, Panda Bear's illustrations feature them against bold backgrounds. (My sensitive younger toddler found the red wolf and the black panther illustrations a little scary, so we skip those pages for now.)

Although this book doesn't lend itself to teaching basic colors and animal sounds the way that the original does, it is a good way to teach the concept of endangered species to younger children. Overall, a great companion to a classic!

Not quite as captivating as Brown, Bear

It's a nice concept and most kids will love the words, different animals and the concept of going from one animal to another. Panda Bear was really written because Brown Bear established such a terrific template. In other words it's a sequel. Like most sequels it doesn't quite measure up.
Kids will still enjoy the colorful pictures, sounds of words and guessing what comes next in the story. Perhaps that's all they need. Sometimes the educational aspect is important and sometimes kids just need entertainment. This is entertaining for little ones and it's a simple enough story so that little ones can start pretending to read and feel more grown up.
