About the Author

Christy Wampole is an assistant professor of French at Princeton University. Her research focuses primarily on twentieth and twenty-first century French and Italian literature and thought. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Mood Over Matter

Dr. Wampole advocates moving beyond the nihilism of Generation X and the ironic posturing of Generation Y. She proposes an “Other Seriousness” that abandons hipster ironic eclecticism for a middle-path eclecticism that is less mean spirited. She states: “The Other Seriousness is middle seeking....The Other Seriousness is intellectually agnostic; it doesn’t commit to a particular school of thought or to some specific method. It borrows at will...” “The Other Seriousness is calm...attentive...improvisational...curatorial...joyful.”

While very pleasant sounding, the Other Seriousness falters as it approaches controversial topics. For example, Dr. Wampole states that universities today “feel more and more like expanding cubicles.” (231) “College is now where you go to network and to fulfill requirements.” (232) This is very true, and the reason why students act like corporate drones is that universities themselves have been turned into predatory corporate entities run for the benefit of their administrative elites.

Rather than advocating a change in power and priorities at the universities (which really could change student culture), Dr. Wampole encourages a hypothetical student to ignore this reality and double-down on developing his or her consciousness. After all, she writes: “You don’t have to put on your earning face yet.” (232) This is terrible advice to give a student when the university parking meter is running at $40,000 a year.

Any student or visitor to an American university can quickly see that real institutional power is vested in the central administration. Dr. Wampole, however, speaks for three generations of academics who have sought to avoid the unseemly topic of power in their own institutions. She writes: “So the problem of power may have answered itself. Power will be spread, densely, in a place called nowhere.” (84)

This is evasive nonsense and The Other Seriousness is itself pseudo-serious: it proclaims a mood of seriousness and then congratulates itself (and you, the serious reader) for that mood, without ever doing the hard work of critical engagement. The Other Seriousness may thus find a receptive audience among the slackers and hipsters it purports to criticize.

“The Other Serious: Essays for the New American Generation” echoes in many respects Italo Calvino’s “Six Memos for the Next Millennium”: the genre, the intended audience, and the concern with the edification of our culture, especially that of the youth, are similar in both works. Such similarity does not have to be a bad thing, but it does raise questions about originality of style and thought. However, in one section of the book the similarity becomes too strong for comfort: Wampole’s program-setting introduction follows all too closely Calvino’s essay on lightness, an inspiration Wampole never acknowledges. Hence the one star.

Thought-provoking, enlightening, and witty

This book was a gift from a very dear friend, and I found in it a number of ideas and observations that, while seemingly obvious, are full of insight. Some reviewers have said that it's trite and full of evasive nonsense; I found, however, that those observations miss the point. Being aware of and fully conscious of what's around would allow one to better criticize it. She calls for a self-awareness that is desperately needed in our modern society, and advocates for personal responsibility to one's own life, as opposed to accepting blindly the structures as they appear or blaming whatever structures currently exist. No great cultural change can come without many personal changes first.
I found this book tremendously refreshing, and have given it to others to read as well. It is great modern philosophy, and quite relevant to our lives.

It's great because it's simplistic and you don't need a scientific ...

A book that does exactly what the titles says; it's a brief history of time via Hawking's perspective. It loosely goes through the history of physics to show how we've gotten to the ideas we accept as true today. It's great because it's simplistic and you don't need a scientific background to enjoy it. I'm personally from an engineering standpoint and took an intro to quantum mechanics class in college... so I was really happy to see some topics from that come back around for me... but in even better to understand terms than I had seen. I read the entire book on two long flights and was definitely worth the money. If you like physics or space and you want an introduction... or even just a nice cohesive timeline of ideas... this book is great.

You, too, can become an accidental physicist!

I read this book with my oldest son (13 almost 14 years old) and enjoyed it even more than when I first read it in the 90s. Stephen Hawking is a brilliant writer. His knowledge of his field (theoretical physics) is vast, deep, and emotional. His ability to distill complex ideas into accessable analogies rivals Richard Rhodes (who brilliantly describes Mad Cow Disease in Deadly Feasts and the atom bomb in Atomic Bomb), whom I consider to be the best in class for this ability. I had no appreciation for Dr. Hawkings' skill when I first read this book - probably because I skimmed it. :-)

This time around, my son and I read a chapter a day and discussed it, first with each other then including my husband, the resident Big Brain. Talk about rewarding! My experience with reading this book with my son has been so positive that we are looking forward to reading the Feynman Lectures together, this time with my husband, this fall. Who knows, I might become an accidental physicist. LOL

Heavy subjects, Well handled

Probably not to everyone's taste (though that's what he's famous for isn't it? making Physics understandable to the masses) Professor Hawking is a very interesting man who is refreshingly straightforward. I say its not for everyone because I have an engineering degree and understand the academic method, am familiar with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics so I find it fairly clearly written. But even so, Einstein's theories are not well understood even today.

Perhaps I like this book as much for how forthright he is about his life, how it has gone, and how its not necessary to be dealt the right "cards" to take advantage of what you have. The book is probably worthwhile for the one point he makes about how its been a blessing for him to be non-communicative (or rather severely communication challenged). He says straight up people leave him alone so he has time to think and prepare his hypotheses and write about them, something that he didn't have time to do when he could easily communicate. He's a very interesting human and has profound observations about the universe that do explain in greater detail than I ever previously understood. His descriptions of Black Holes are thought provoking.

Norman Cohn's book 'The Pursuit of the Millennium' is a classic work for a reason: it is outstanding history and well written. Like most very good histories, it illuminates the past and has implications for the present as well.

Cohn's topic is 'Millenarianism' in the Middle Ages, or the recurring emergence of a collective of "faithful" under the leadership of a charismatic prophet (or prophets) who believe that the world will imminently be transformed into an earthly paradise inhabited by the "select" (i.e., themselves). This Edenic existence will last 1,000 years and then the Last Judgement will forever sort all mankind into the camps of Heaven and Hell. The basis of the millennial paradigm is rooted in the Book of Daniel (Ch. VII: Daniel's Dream) and the Book of Revelation (Ch. XX), as well as the enduring legend that there could be a return to what was wishfully assumed to be mankind's original egalitarian and plentiful existence.

Millenarianism flourished in the Middle Ages in response to anxious and disorienting social conditions, such as rapid population growth and widespread agricultural failures in the High Middle Ages and the Black Death of the Late Middle Ages. The most fervent followers were the marginalized poor whose place within the social structure and whose very survival was under threat. A prophet, who assumed the role of messiah, offered the poor a chance to be among the "select" or elite.

Cohn surveys a series of Millenarian outbreaks, from the poor's participation in the First Crusade (c. 1100), to the English Peasants' Revolt (1381), to the Hussite Rebellion, and it's offspring, the Taborites of Bohemia (c. 1425), to the German Peasants' War fostered by Thomas Müntzer (c.1525), and through the Anabaptist Revolt at Munster (c. 1530).

Modern corollaries of millenarianism are not difficult to conjure; one need only think of Nazi Germany and Hitler's "Thousand-Year Reich" for an obvious echo. Its' "select" - the Volk - largely supported a martial spirit and an intent on conquering "lebensraum" (not unlike the First Crusade). Of course the Nazis grasped power out of the disorienting economic and social conditions of the Weimar Republic. Perhaps no one made better use of these parallels between the Middle Ages' phenomenon and more recent history than Friedrich Reck did in his novella A History of the Münster Anabaptists: Inner Emigration and the Third Reich: A Critical Edition of Friedrich Reck-Malleczewen's Bockelson: A Tale of Mass Insanity (an edition which also includes background commentary and critical exposition).

Cohn concludes his book with reference to the present, where he claims the enduring underpinnings of millenarianism continue to exist in secular forms.

These characters make Mad Max look like a sissy.

This is a wild book. It describes dark times when people are in despair. At these times, and it happens repeatedly, someone decides that he is the Redeemer of the weak. These redeemers create havoc, until the ruling powers decide to put an end to the disturbance.
This is fascinating, little-known history of Europe. These folks make Mad Max look like a sissy. This is mean and it is all true.

"Absolutely astounding... when people fantasize about ideal worlds and the "end of days", their thinking usually get disjointed rather fast. Never did this form of thinking run more prevalent and have such catastrophic consequences than between the 11th and the 15th Cen. This is a collection of some of the most obscure peasant cults and peasant wars that afflict mankind during the middle ages. The results were usually bloody, such as the rebellion of Thomas Muntzer in early 1500s. But what is more interesting is how such thinking of millinearian societies can be extrapolated into the 20th Cen (Hitler & Stalin) and latterly, the an altogether less emphatic form, the Fukuyama thesis that "History has Ended" -- A very good read indeed ! Maybe the best book for 2010 for me. "

As a side Note is interesting that Cohn's book serves as the seminal study of millenarian thinking in general and is often used as a counterpoint in the studies of Marxism, Fascism, and the millenial dreams of the neocons and infantile understanding of the New Agers, and conspiracy theorists... it's all here. A warning what happens when man and womenkind lose their common sense and believe that the ideal is possible.

Absolutely astounding read... a good warning for the present times when ideologues and conspiracy theorists and their ignorant ilk seem to be all around us....

Since 1989, chemist Derek B. Lowe, has worked for several major pharmaceutical companies on drug discovery projects against schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases. After receiving his PhD in chemistry from Duke University, he was awarded a Humboldt fellowship to do postdoctoral research in Germany and has since handled almost 50 elements of the Periodic table. His columns on organic and medicinal chemistry are featured in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Chemistry World, and he has served on the advisory board for Chemical & Engineering News. The beauty, reach and significance of the "central science". Also, things sometimes blow up.

Chemistry is called the "central science" because it interfaces with almost all other sciences - from physics and metallurgy to biology and architecture. The world of molecules underlies every aspect of our daily lives, from the drugs that can save us to the food we eat to the designer fabrics we wear to - equally realistically - the pesticides that can pollute our environment.

In this book chemist and blogger Derek Lowe shows us the reach, relevance and beauty of the central science through a series of two hundred and fifty milestones. Lowe does a very good job of capturing the intrinsic diversity of chemistry. The entries in this encyclopedia range from the utterly mundane but utterly indispensable (soap making, the bronze age, porcelain, modern drug discovery), to the exotic (at least for non-chemists - MALDI, Viking Steel, polywater, Nozaki coupling) to the historical (Boyle's 'The Skeptical Chymist', Bauer's tome on metal smelting, "De Re Metallica").

The cast of characters here is mouth-watering. The ordinary and yet immensely important everyday implements and protocols of the laboratory (Soxhlet extractor, separatory funnel, glove boxes, Erlenmeyer flask) get ample mention, as do important instrumental techniques (mass spectrometry, x-ray crystallography). Theoretical and historically important chemical concepts (ideal gas law, structural formulas, Dalton's atomic theory, hydrogen bonding) also get a nod. The former showcase the fact that the greatest revolutions in chemistry have been enabled by tools; the latter showcase the great ideas which illuminated the world discovered by these tools.

Lowe also devotes adequate space to the palpable beauty and joy of common chemical compounds and elements - Perkin's mauve, bakelite, teflon, polyethylene, technitium. Much of chemistry is about stunning colors, smells and sounds, and Lowe spares no effort in illustrating these marvels of the chemical world; the colorful side of chemistry is also one that lends itself well to the lavishly illustrated photographs typical of this series of books. Key chemical reactions used by organic chemists to synthesize the molecules that lie at the heart of the central science (Birch reduction, Merrifield synthesis, Ziegler-Natta calaysis) are scattered like signposts in these pages. The substances that these reactions produce - penicillin, sulfuric acid, the Pill, borosilicate glass - turn out to be crucial ingredients of our modern way of life. However the book also explores the ugly side of chemistry. Like any other science chemistry is Janus faced, and the same exploration of matter which gave us penicillin also gave us nitroglycerin, nerve gas and carbon dioxide. The unseemly manifestations of chemistry in the hands of unreliable human beings are investigated through entries describing the Bhopal Disaster, the Donora Death Fog, chemical warfare and the thalidomide tragedy. This list of entries makes it clear that the same science that can reveal and charm can also kill and maim.

Which one of these aspects we embrace is up to us. As we decide, this diverse collection of key concepts, techniques, elements, and history will hopefully drive home the deep relationship, inherent beauty and immense practical significance that the world of chemical science presents. A world without chemistry would look dramatically different and impoverished from the world we inhabit, and this listing shows us how. It's a worthy addition to the series and to science libraries in general.

Absolutely first rate

I trained as an organic chemist, and have been following Derek's blog since he started it back in the early 2000's. This book captures the essence of his blog, including his subtle wit and humor. It's a wide-ranging collection of one-page essays on the left page with interesting images on the facing pages. The essays are in roughly historical order, from the mists of prehistory to the current day. They're reasonably non-technical and accessible even to non-scientists, although even working chemists will probably learn a few things they'd never known about before reading this book. My wife, who is a public librarian and has little exposure to or interest in science, thinks the book is fascinating. Reading it won't turn her into a chemist, but it will give her a profound appreciation for the history of chemistry and its impact on the advance of civilization.

Derek may not appreciate me saying it, but I found this book to be an ideal bathroom book. It sits in a magazine basket in our foyer bathroom, and more than a couple of our visitors have found it fascinating. I always encourage them to buy a copy for themselves, and particularly for their kids.

"The Chemistry Book" [0730 - 10-26-2016 - Science - Chemistry]

"The Chemistry Book" is an excellent source for information about the science of chemistry. The format of the book is quite intriguing. There are 250 one page essays accompanied by a full page related drawing or photograph. The pages follow a chronological history of concepts, discoveries and methodology directly related to chemistry.
I would assume that this book would be an useful addition to a high school library or a helpful text for an AP chemistry student.

This is a distinctive book in many respects. It is not a text book yet assumes a "reasonable" knowledge of chemistry. Reasonable being a strong familiarity with the basic terminology and concepts of the subject.

This retired reader has no formal chemistry training but an abiding curiosity about the subject. Having the time and inclination I read through the entire book several pages per day. I came away with a deep appreciation of this science and the persistence of its practitioners. Learning how mankind has strived over several thousand years to unravel chemical mysteries was very inspiring.

A treasure trove, not for Lahaye fans

I'm a bit of a dispensationalist I guess, Beale is not. But I just love this commentary. The introduction is a wealth of information on Revelation, and worth the price of the book. I have been using this as a reference while teaching through Revelation in our Wed night Bible study, and Beale's emphasis on OT imagery in Revelation is fascinating. It makes a lot of sense. To me this is a major value of the book, due to it's emphasis on exegesis and tying it in to the rest of the Bible canon has been a great help in seeing Revelation afresh. In the commentary section, I find myself disagreeing some, and especially his comments on Revelation 11. I'm sure in a debate, G.K. Beale would whip me like I was his dog if the topic were Rev 11, but what i so enjoy about this volume is that despite my disagreements with his views I find his monumental contributions to be priceless. In short, between Beale and Iain Duguid's commentary on Ezekiel, I am seriously re-evaluating my views on eschatology and apocalyptic hermeneutic. Which is what good books should do. Dr. Beale, thou wouldst feign make me a covenantalist :))

Thorough & Substantive, Comprehensive Commentary

The commentary by Beale can serve as the main commentary you use to study Revelation. The density of the book may turn some readers off to it; however, it is organized to give readers clear indications of each sections content, the main assertions and interpretations, special sections to provide more focused discussion and further references and background on texts. It is not necessary to know Greek to use this commentary.

I read through this entire book in preparing a study on Revelation and found that it was an excellent choice for such use. I think Beale approaches Revelation with a sound theological foundation, understanding of Biblical theology, appreciation for historical, literary and religious contexts, and awareness of various views and arguments for the big and small pictures of Revelation.

Beale writes for the highest level of academia, as this is often a text used by seminary classes, and he is accessible for the seasoned lay reader. In other words, this book does not require a seminary education to understand and appreciate. It does require a passion to gain understanding and wisdom of the Book of Revelation and God's salvation.

Like all good commentaries on Revelation, Beale introduces and discusses the several approaches to interpreting the book. I think Beale's method and approach to interpreting Revelation are correct theologically, historically and Scripturally. He describes his approach as Eclectic or Redemptive-Historical. He recognizes historically relevant texts without limiting them to one historical reality. He recognizes those texts that refer to future events as relevant to Christians in all ages. He takes up the crucial and challenging task to identify through careful exegesis how texts pertain to the past, present and future. He sees most symbols as applicable to realities throughout the "church age" until the New Jerusalem descends at the return of Jesus. This approach allows for the "Already-Not Yet" reality of God's Kingdom and Christ's rule. Beale identifies the various genres in Revelation and interprets them appropriately.

Beale writes, "The book portrays an end-time new creation which has irrupted into the present old world through the death and resurrection of Christ, as well as through the sending of the Spirit at Pentecost." He often restates themes of Revelation emphasized to the original audience and to the church in all times.

Throughout the book, Beale will cite differing views on texts and then offer his interpretation and why. I found this process helpful. Those who approach Revelation with a different interpreation such as a futurist view would be well served to read this and examine Beale's interpretation against their own.

Beale has contributed the chapter on Revelation to the book Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament And in this commentary on Revelation, he provides many references and connections between Revelation and the Old Testament. This is a necessity to understanding and interpreting Revelation correctly. Beale stays faithful to New Testament and Old Testament teachings in his interpretation of Revelation. What Beale writes concerning the "millenium" in Revelation 20 reveals his approach: "the only hope of obtaining any clarity about this segment is to interpret it primarily in the light of its closest parallels elsewhere in the [Book of Revelation] and in the New Testament and Old Testament." BEale also references extra-canonical sources and traditions when helpful.

Ultimately, Beale's interpretation centers on the gospel of Jesus Christ -- the cross, resurrection, ascension, pouring out of the Holy Spirit and his promised return and consummating his kingdom. Beale writes the following concerning the suffering of saints revealed in the book: "Suffering of Christians is a sign, not of Satan's victory, but of the saints' victory over Satan because of their belief in the triumph of the cross, with which their suffering identifies them." As Jesus Christ, the Lamb who was slain and is alive, is the center of Revelation, He is the center of this commentary, too.

I can fully recommend this book to help readers gain the correct message of Revelation, its purposes, truths, warnings, confrontations, etc. The message of Revelation is an imperative for the church, and it is important for the church to study the message and teach it correctly. This book is a great tool for that purpose.

It is one of the finest commentaries I have ever read

This commentary is overwhelming in its depth and scope. Dr. Beale not only has a tremendous knowledge of the literature surrounding Revelation but is able to generate a cohesive convincing amillennial reading supported by the extra-canonical literature as well as close contextual reading of Scripture. It soundly complements his Theology of the NT. It is one of the finest commentaries I have ever read and I believe I am able to begin to grasp this difficult book for the first time.
