About the Author
Nick Lane is a biochemist in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London, and leads the UCL Origins of Life Program. He was awarded the 2015 Biochemical Society Award for his outstanding contribution to the molecular life sciences. He is the author of Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution, which won the 2010 Royal Society Prize for Science Books, as well as Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life and Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World.

Just when I think evolution books can't get any better, the ante is upped.

Twenty-five years ago when I was learning creationism rather than biology in the Christian college I graduated from, we had a fairly good excuse. No doubt scientists knew the evidence well enough and found it overwhelmingly supported the fact and theory of evolution. But for non-biology students and typical laypersons, the evidence was never presented in an accessible or cogent enough way to persuade us, and so we defaulted to the easy-to-grasp, if simplistic, notion that "God did it." Period, quotation marks, end of story.

The excuse is gone, and each new book in this field seems to top the previous entries in some key aspect. "Life Ascending" takes a biochemical approach to the fascinating "inventions" of evolution, from the beginning of life to photosynthesis, sex...even death. Other writers have dipped into this important topic, notably Sean Carroll, but I am not aware of another popularly written book that focuses so extensively on this one aspect of evolutionary theory. And for my money, it's the most compelling evidence that exists.

The chapters on the origins of life and metabolism (Krebs cycle) are worth the price of the book alone. Will the hypotheses advanced convince a hard-core Intelligent Design promoter? Not likely. The speculation required still eclipses the evidence provided, but a very plausible-sounding pathway is put forth, and it's fascinating to think about. What's more, key elements of each hypothesis are TESTABLE, setting them well apart from the comparitively content-free notion of Intelligent Design.

The capper is how lucid the prose is, and how entertaining. Even when the topics get technical and potentially dry, great care is taken to turn phrases, add color, and supply interesting metaphors and examples to pull the reader through. I can hardly recommend this book more highly.

Fascinating yet frustrating

At times the book makes its points clearly and it is fascinating. but so much of the time it is unfocused, not content with describing natures greatest inventions, the author insists on giving equal weight to the history of thought surrounding each invention.
When he is focused, he can be witty and compelling, but you turn around for a moment, and he has put down his rifle and is wielding a blunderbus.
There is so much that is interesting and compelling in the book, but then for long periods he throws in so many half-explained terms that it is like listening to an orchestra in which every instrument is being played at exactly the same volume.
For example, photosynthesis; he explains some things beautifully, such as the extraordinary stability of water molecules and therefore the inherent difficulty in separating oxygen from hydrogen. And he is entertaining as he employs the metaphor of a street hustler, who manages to sell an additional electron to the carbon dioxide molecule that is perfectly happy without it. But then, having convinced me so thoroughly of the difficulties involved, he seemed to rush over the exact details of how photosynthesis overcomes them.

counting process approach to survival analysis

Another reviewer has given a detailed and accurate account of this book which may already be considered a classic. So I can be brief in my remarks. Odd Aalen in his thesis work developed a lot of the theory of counting processes. Since survival analysis is based on time to event data and the study of the reliability of repairable systems involves counting recurrences point or counting processes can be used to construct statistical models that can be used in these disciplines. These results are important to inferences about survival curves, product warranties, and recurrent events that are important in clinical trials and biostatistics in general as well as in reliability engineering.

This text is not an applied book but rather a very deep theoretical book that requires sophisticated mathematics and probability theory. There are applications of this powerful theory both in univariate and multivariate survival analysis. This book can be challenging to many readers but can provide a deep understanding of the theory. For the applications the following books would be helpful (1) Nelson's life data analysis book, (2) the book by Kalbfleish and Prentice, (3) Lawless and (4) Elant-Johnson and Johnson to name a few good ones. For the theory and applications in multivariate survival analysis I recommend the book by Hougaard who is a Danish statistician with a great deal of clinical experience from his years of working on diabetes trials at Novo Nordisk.

Extremely Advanced Treatment of Multivariate Survival Analysis

This book is the definitive text on multivariate survival analysis and takes the reader well-beyond the introductory treatment found in Hougaard's "Analysis of Multivariate Survival Data". Andersen, et al. is a good addition to the library of anyone working with data containing more than one cause of failure.

However, Andersen, et al. demand a great deal from the reader and the prerequisite list here is rather extensive. Minimal preparation for this book starts with Hosmer & Lemeshow's Applied Survival Analysis: Regression Modeling of Time to Event Data . You'll need to understand modern real analysis, at least up through the Radon-Nikodym Theorem. I recommend Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis. You'll also need good understanding of the martingale theory of univariate counting processes. I recommend Fleming & Harrington's Counting Processes and Survival Analysis. Next, you'll need a solid understanding of Markov processes. I highly recommend Stroock's An Introduction to Markov Processes. Pay particularly close attention to Stroock's treatment of non-homogeneous Markov Processes toward the end of his text. Andersen et al make extensive use of non-homogeneous Markov processes throughout. Finally, you should have a good reference for basic properties of the Volterra Product-Integral. (Andersen et al provide references to the research literature.)

The authors begin their exposition with a short Chapter 1 by introducing some practical applications of multivariate survival analysis along with concrete data sets.

Chapter 2 is another short chapter which (very) briefly outlines the mathematical prerequisites for the remainder of the book. Readers who have carefully studied the prerequisite list will be adequately prepared for this chapter. Those who have not will feel completely overwhelmed.

In Chapter 3, the authors introduce the basic semi parametric models under consideration, including the Cox proportional hazards model, the Aalen multiplicative intensity model and the additive intensity model. These are considered as base models which can then be components of a more comprehensive Markov model. Censored data and basic hypothesis on censoring distributions (in terms of the appropriate filtration) are discussed.

Chapter 4 covers nonparametric estimation and is crucial material in order to validate a parametric or semi parametric model against a given data set. Martingale properties of the Nelson-Aalen estimator, the Kaplan-Meier estimator and a Markov model estimator (called the Aalen-Johansen estimator) are thoroughly studied. Smoothing techniques are discussed and could be used to augment classical nonparametric smoothing techniques offered in Ryan's "Modern Regression Methods".

Chapter 5 is a short chapter on nonparametric hypothesis testing and offers a survey of test statistics used, for example, to test whether two survival distributions are the same.

The authors use the next chapter, Chapter 6, to touch lightly on a number of topics, including parametric models, generalized maximum likelihood estimation, model diagnostics and goodness of fit.

Chapter 7 is really the core of the book and discusses semi parametric regression models from the Markov process point-of-view. The chapter is well-written and covers the basics of Markov model specification, estimation and assessment. The authors illustrate the techniques through the use of several examples.

The book wraps up with discussion on estimator consistency and asymptotic normality in Chapter 8, a brief introduction of subject-specific frailty models in Chapter 9 and an overview of multivariate time scales in Chapter 10.

The book is written in research monograph-style. As such, there are no formal exercises. However several of the results in the book (e.g. Theorem II.6.7) are stated without proof or literature reference and require genuine work on the part of the reader in order verify them.

to survival analysis and counting processes by

The treatment of the multiplicative intensity model

in Chapter 3 is especially nice.

However, lost in all of this unification and elegant

mathematical notation is the underlying physical problems,

which after all is the whole point. Unfortunately, my

feeling is that scientists who are really interested

in studying event history data (like surival analysis)

will find this book unhelpful and probably even unreadable.

What was it about Germany that made the rise of Adolf Hitler and his murderous regime possible? That troubling question has occupied many fine minds over the last six decades, few more lucid and thoughtful than the late historian and journalist Sebastian Haffner. In this book, drawn from a manuscript he did not live to complete, Haffner examines the social and cultural conditions that made Germany ill-equipped for democracy and ripe for totalitarianism. Among these, Haffner writes, were a generational war between an apathetic adult population and a youth "familiar with nothing but political clamor, sensation, anarchy, and the dangerous lure of irresponsible numbers games"; a fatal fondness for the winner-and-loser dichotomy of sports and a rage for spectacle and entertainment; a resignation through which ordinary people came to "adapt to living with clenched teeth, in a manner of speaking," rather than stand up in protest. In that climate, Haffner--who left Germany just before World War II broke out--suggests, Nazism was almost an inevitability, against which he, too, tried to withdraw into "a small, secure, private domain," like so many others of his time and place. A sample historical headline: "1890: Wilhelm II dismisses Bismarck." No one's life was disrupted, writes Haffner. "No family was torn apart, no friendship broken up, no one fled their country." Compare that with "1933: Hindenburg sends for Hitler." In this case, "[a]n earthquake shatters 66 million lives." Thus begins a vivid examination of just how Hitler's ascension affected an ordinary German, a young lawyer with no strong political views, whose career and life were disrupted by the Nazis. Written in 1939, this memoir was not published until 2000, when Pretzel, Haffner's son, brought it out in Germany, where it was a bestseller. Haffner alternates political analysis with accounts of how the rise of the Nazis in the 1920s and early '30s affected his attempts to build a career, keep friendships alive and kindle romantic liaisons. His analysis of the failure of post-WWI German society to create stability is familiar, but Haffner writes with a close familiarity that makes the old new again. And his description of the way the Nazis invaded people's daily lives shines. It becomes clear how many "good Germans" struggled against impossible odds to keep their personal lives politics-free. Unfortunately, Haffner's manuscript ends with 1933 (Pretzel covers the rest of Haffner's life, beginning with immigration to England, in a brief afterword). This intimate self-portrait stands with Victor Klemperer's two-part memoir, I Will Bear Witness, as evidence that the personal can offer insight into the political tragedy of Nazism.

*Starred Review* The author's son, Oliver Pretzel, had his father's book published upon the latter's death in 1999 at the age of 92, and has now thankfully translated it for publication here. This is a gem of a book--with as much intellectual force as, say, The Diary of Anne Frank has emotional force. Haffner, who became a distinguished historian and journalist after fleeing Germany to Britain in 1938, wrote this book in 1939, covering his upbringing from 1907 through 1933. But the book has an almost diary-like feel, so immediate is Haffner's writing, and his elegance of phrase is reminiscent of Sanche de Gramont. To what does Haffner attribute the mass ceding of power to the Nazis? "As a nation," the Germans "are soft, unreliable, and without backbone . . . at the moment of truth, when other nations rise spontaneously to the occasion, the Germans collectively and limply collapsed." Haffner's descriptions of his walks in Berlin in his mid-twenties, ducking into doorways to avoid having to salute a passing swastika, add almost a cinematic allure to the book, as do his verbatim transcriptions of conversations in his debating club, some of whose members had joined the Hitler Youth, and with his passive father as they discussed the author's higher education options in Paris. This is a small masterpiece that should join William Shirer's Berlin Diary as essential reading about that fearsome era. Allen Weakland

For anyone who wants to understand what life was like for an intelligent German citizen from WWl to before WWll, as it slowly over a couple of decades slipped under fascist rule. Hitler did not suddenly appear, the far right paved the way (some unwittingly), removing the peoples rights over time, supposedly to protect them from the communists. Instead of the communists, they coped the extreme right in the form of Hitler and his Nazis.

The author was not a Jew, nor a communist, nor union member, he was a bright young German man studying law. Yet he had to flee his own country, as life had become unbearable and frightening in Berlin under the brutality of Hitler. He found refuge in England, getting out just in time before war broke out. He worked a journalist and returned to Berlin in 1956, he died in his 90's.

In Australia, over the past few years alone, our right wing Government has removed hundreds of our rights and freedoms, supposedly to protect us from Muslim terrorists. As we don't have a Bill of Rights, Australians are more vulnerable to the likes of Hitler than the US is. We are sitting ducks now. This book is a must read.

Unique perspective - written in 1939; flows well

This is a memoir written in 1939 by a young German man, who was a child during WW I and grows to be a man during the post war period. As an adult, his views "of the day" during Hitler's move into power are unique and elucidating.

It was published by his son after the author's death. The point of view is unique and eye-opening as it was written prior to many of the major battles of WW II. He draws fascinating parallels between the individual German's daily decisions during HItler's rise to power within Germany to the European nations' decision of similar nature - but on a much grander scale.

It is a timeless story and a MUST READ for any election time.

I've often wondered how the German people could have been so taken in by Adolph Hitler. It's an easy explanation to say it was because of the dire economic straits German was in after The Great War.

This book, however, written from the viewpoint of a young adult living through the actual experience is extraordinary. It supplies reasons why the Germans did not take Hitler seriously, until it was too late.

An extremely interesting, informative work.

About the Author

Martin and Olivia Olson are an actual father and daughter who play an evil father and daughter on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time.

Olivia is an actress, singer-songwriter, and recording artist who plays Marceline the Vampire Queen. As a songwriter, she wrote and sang songs for Disney’s Phineas and Ferb. Olivia also sang “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in the classic film Love Actually. She wrote most of Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook!!!

Martin is a comedy writer, songwriter, and poet who plays Hunson Abadeer, Lord of Evil, on Adventure Time. As a television writer, he has received four Emmy nominations. Martin is known for writing Phineas and Ferb, the New York Times bestselling Adventure Time Encyclopaedia (Abrams, 2013), and his satirical book Encyclopaedia of Hell (Feral House, 2011).

They live in Los Angeles.

Adventure Time: The Enchiridion and Marcy's Super Secret Scrapbook

This book is great. This is the Enchiridion from Adventure Time and Marceline the Vampires Scrapbook. The book was bigger than I thought it would be which is a great surprise. This book is about double the size of the Adventure Time Encyclopedia (which this book is a great companion to) and I like that half the book is the Enchiridion and the other half (just flip the book over) is Marceline’s Scrap book. Both halves of the book get a good number of pages to impress and expand on the ever growing world of Ooo.

I really like all the detail, you can tell this was made with love and fans of the show (Written by Martin and Olivia Olson who both play characters on Adventure Time, Olivia plays Marceline). There’s cool little things like taped down pieces, tons of little scribbles and sketches. I really like the parchment style scrolls and spell sections in the Enchiridion and the hand drawn sketches in the scrapbook. This book is really great for the price (under $20) this is a great book for any fan of Adventure Time, and can really be appreciated by anyone of any age. I didn’t want to show too many pictures and spoil the good stuff, lots of good jokes and Easter Eggs inside the book(s). The Adventure Time Enchiridion and Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook is mathematical and you have to get it, FULLY RECOMMENDED.

So you wanna be a hero....

Before I had this book, I didn't know what it took to be hero. Now I know I'll need a sword at least, and a healthy distaste for wizards.

Beware though, this book is not some novelty item. It is long and detailed with a healthy backstory of the Adventure Time universe. My daughter loves Marceline, so she got a big kick out of it.

Must have book for AT fans!

The Enchiridion half: It has all the humor of the show with a few nods to the overall mythology of the show thrown in. It doesn't give you insight into individual characters, but you have the sense it was written from the perspective of someone important from the AT universe long ago. Fans will love the scrap book half of the book because it gives you insight into Simon before he wore the crown, his time in the apocalypse with Marceline struggling against the crown's influence, Marceline's adolescence, and her time spent vampire hunting as seen on the show.

WWII was the most destructive war in history and caused the greatest dislocation of cultural artifacts. Hundreds of thousands of items remain missing. The main burden fell to a few hundred men and women, curators and archivists, artists and art historians from 13 nations. Their task was to save and preserve what they could of Europe's great art, and they were called the Monuments Men. (Coincidentally or not, this book appears only briefly after Ilaria Dagnini Brey's The Venus Fixers: The Untold Story of the Allied Soldiers Who Saved Italy's Art During World War II, Reviews, June 1.) Edsel has presented their achievements in documentaries and photographs. He and Witter (coauthor of the bestselling Dewey) are no less successful here. Focusing on the organization's role in northwest Europe, they describe the Monuments Men from their initial mission to limit combat damage to structures and artifacts to their changed focus of locating missing items. Most had been stolen by the Nazis. In southern Germany alone, over a thousand caches emerged, containing everything from church bells to insect collections. The story is both engaging and inspiring. In the midst of a total war, armies systematically sought to mitigate cultural loss. (Sept. 3)

Robert M. Edsel is the founder and president of the Monuments Men Foundation, a recipient of the National Humanities Medal, and a trustee at the National WWII Museum. He lives in Dallas, Texas.

Bret Witter has collaborated on six New York Times bestsellers. He lives in Decatur, Georgia.

If you are patient, you will find the treasure in this book

If I had written this review when I was only 25% of the way through this book, I would have given it 2 stars. The beginning of the book can only be described as plodding and in my opinion was not very well constructed. However, I hung in there and the payoff came in the remainder of the book.

The book describes an overlooked group of men and women who served during WWII to save priceless buildings and works of arts in Europe. It also describes the internal conflicts of these folks who wondered, for example, if the German people deserved the return of their Nazi-stolen art. The efforts of these dedicated service-men and -women were, naturally enough, largely overshadowed by the inarguably more important discoveries at the end of WWII, such as the truths revealed by the liberation of the concentration camps. This book is thus a wonderful contribution to an overlooked history of the time.

The end of the book describes the discovery of hidden German repositories of art; the volume and quality of art found in these hiding places is absolutely staggering. I had the pleasure of seeing Michelangelo's flawless Madonna when I was in Bruges and was riveted by her WWII story, which was not described in any detail in the materials given out by the museums there.

In summary: stick with it. The book had some problems with flow, especially in the beginning, but the payoff of the middle and ending was worth it.

A story that we all should read

One of the most enjoyable aspects to the study of history is always finding new stories. Even when you think you know a lot about a field you find something new and enjoyable. That one of the many reasons that I enjoyed Monuments Men so much. Robert Edsel has provided us with a look at an area of World War II studies that has gone virtually unnoticed for nearly 70 years. The men and women of the MFAA (Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives) Division served an almost unknown, but incredibly valuable part in the war against the destructive evil of Nazism.

When Hitler's forces overran Europe they set about looting the national artistic treasures in a methodical manner. Priceless treasures were pillaged from the museums and galleries of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and other European nations. All property belonging to Jews were taken. Hitler's dream was to create an enormous museum that would be the envy of the entire world. Instead he launched the most destructive war in history.

The allies were aware of the cultural heritage in the areas that they would be fighting. This is why the MFAA was created. The original MFAA officers were tasked with traveling into the war zones and identifying historic sites that needed to be preserved. The stories of what these men accomplished is truly amazing. Time after time they were able to save important buildings from being destroyed.

As the book progresses we see another dimension of their work. They began to investigate the Nazi looting. Their job shifted from simply protecting buildings from destruction to locating stolen works of art. At times the book resembles an action thriller story. The theft of priceless works of art. The heroic civilians who work undercover to spy on the Nazis. The small band of men rushing from place to place to save these priceless objects.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the subject, I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed everything about it. Robert Edsel has done an excellent job of sharing this important story with us. Perhaps there is no greater evidence of the statement that those who do not study history are bound to repeat it. We never studied the important work of the Monuments Men. As a result the allies were not prepared when Iraq was invaded in 2003. The looting of those priceless antiquities could have been avoided by simply employing a group like the MFAA. Perhaps this book will help to raise awareness so that tragedies like the Iraq museum will not happen again.

Interesting Read

A few years ago, on a trip to St. Louis, Missouri and I toured their well-known art museum. I noted a number of paintings on loan by a Jewish family that stated the paintings were returned to the family by the Monument Men. I said to myself I need to read the book. Finally, I just did.

From 1939 to the end of World War II, the Nazis Army seized priceless paintings, sculptures, tapestries and other artworks from museum, palaces, cathedrals and private homes. The Nazi plundered everything and carted it off to Germany. The Allied Forces created a group called the MFAA (Monuments, Fine Art and Archives) Division. This group consisted of men and women who were curators, archivists, art historians and artist. Their job was to find and return the art to its owners.

The book is well written and researched. Edsel examined family letters and records, museum and church archives and even the Nazi archives. The book got off to a slow start but the ending was much more interesting. Sometimes it read like a detective story. I found the repetitiveness very annoying. I found the story interesting but the way the book was written just did not grab me as I felt it should. It is a hard thing to explain. I am only going to give this book a three rating instead of a four because the author never managed to obtain that something to make the book great. The book was 468 pages. I read the e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad.
