The most useful examples here present a Python library for general accounting objects. You'll learn how to write COM servers in Python and then how to script them in Visual Basic (used here to build user interfaces) and how to control Word and Excel with OLE Automation in Python. One standout example looks at building and printing accounting reports in Office 2000 using Python as the script language.

About the Author

Mark Hammond is an independent Microsoft Windows consultant working out of Melbourne, Australia. He studied computer science at the South Australian Institute of Technology (now the University of South Australia), and then worked with several large financial institutions in Australia. He started his consulting operation in 1995. Mark has produced many of the Windows extensions for Python, including PythonWin, Active Scripting, and Active Debugging support, and coauthored the COM framework and extensions. He is also a leading authority on Active Scripting and related technologies and has spoken on this subject at Microsofts three most recent Professional Developers conferences. Apart from being a father to his teenage daughter, having an interest in live music, and providing way-too-many free Python extensions, Mark has no life!

Andy Robinson is a London-based consultant specializing in business analysis, object-oriented design, and Windows development. He studied physics and philosophy, then Japanese studies at Oxford. He spent a year in advertising in Tokyo, two more in investment banking, and a long spell as the finance director of a startup in the sports industry. Observing that in all these positions he always ended up having to rewrite software, he moved to full-time computer consulting four years ago. He is currently helping one of the world's largest fund managers to internationalize their systems to handle Asian languages, developing Python systems for financial analysis, and reporting. Back when Andy had spare time, his passions were track and field, and rock climbing. Right now his two sons, Tim and Harry, are taking up all of his time.

Be careful

This book was written in 2000. There's not a problem working with the examples if you're using python 2.7.x. However, the book opens up with a pretty heavy intro to business finances accompanied by a class library that you need to download and make work on your system. There's about 6 chapters of this before you learn that you need to know VB. I looked into learning VB, and apparently VB is generally deemed obsolete and not even installed on windows 8? No thank you.

This book is cool if you're pretty heavy into python programming and you know some other languages as well. This book is not cool if you have beginning to intermediate level python skills.

An oldie but goodie.

A good way to get Python to 'do stuff' in a Win32 environment. I've found it most useful for dealing with people who utilize an exclusively Windows environment. Mostly, I've just taken my programs that others 'need' information from and quickly tacked on a printed report or updated spreadsheet that they can use. I don't know about writing whole programs in Windows, but it was more than adequate at helping me bridge the gaps I needed bridged. I presume the book to be pretty dated, but nothing I used was so out-of-date as to be non-functional.

Dated but Still Very Pertinent

For me the most valuable part of the book was Chapter 5 where it explains how to create COM objects using Python scripts. I always knew that I could do this, but I was never quite sure how. The example worked perfectly with Python 2.6 and got me up and running in no time. By doing this I can easily share my functions and classes with my coworkers who only use VBA.

If you are using Python to automate any of the Microsoft Office Applications, I highly reccomend it.

About the Author

Known as “the father of software quality,” Watts S. Humphrey is the author of numerous influential books on the software-development process and software process improvement. Humphrey is a fellow of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, where he founded the Software Process Program and provided the vision and early leadership for the original Capability Maturity Model (CMM). He also is the creator of the Personal Software Process (PSP) and Team Software Process (TSP). Recently, he was awarded the National Medal of Technology—the highest honor given by the president of the United States to America's leading innovators.

Not what I expected from a great man like Humphrey

This book was not what I expected. Humphrey uses mostly anecdotal examples to illustrate his many points. Though this helps get his points across, it does not really prove his assertions.
Most of his advice is not practical, or even possible in the employment situations I've seen (and heard about) over the last ten years or so. I found a few interesting parts, much like I would find it interesting to listen to the tales of any old-timer about the `good old days', and some of his insights about people in general are quite keen.
Some parts really hurt my will to read on. For example, he seems to believe that if a manager can get his team members to work lots of overtime, that higher productivity will automatically follow. Someone who has written books about the use of careful measurements during software development should know better. The evidence I've seen and read (in other books) indicates that regular overtime is a `bad smell' of deeper problems, and a perfect recipe for low quality and ultimately failed projects.
He even claims that the manager's job is to put schedule pressure on the engineers, otherwise they'll take forever and never get anything done. Again, he includes a little anecdotal example. However, with very few exceptions all of the engineers I've worked with hold themselves to certain standards of quality and productivity. Usually management pressure (especially the old time-crunch game) just hurts more than it helps.
Overall, much of his advice doesn't fit with the reality I've been experiencing lately.
I recommend comparing and contrasting Humphrey's advice with that found in "Peopleware" (2nd ed.) by DeMarco & Lister.

Flawed but useful

This book is rich in detailed advice about managing teams of engineers. Futhermore Watts Humphrey uses many interesting examples --- some anecdotal, some from his experience at IBM, and some historical --- to illustrate this advice. My favorite example involved President Theodore Roosevelt and the introduction of continuous-aim firing in the US Navy.
However, there is a flaw that runs through this book from the beginning to the end. Humphrey assumes that the organizational context is a large vertically integrated company like IBM circa 1970. That kind of company has all but disappeared nowadays. It is rare for large companies to develop new products today --- instead they buy the startup that has already developed the product they want. Important champions aren't powerful executives; rathey they are wealthy angels or powerful venture capitalists that fund the startups.
Interestingly, this flaw hurts some chapters and hardly affects others. For example, the chapter on the importance of the commitment ethic remains true even though the organizational context is very different nowadays.

The sections where he talks about why technical people appear dissatisfied and how managers fail them were just amazingly useful once I forgot to fight the contents.

Since its initial publication in 1973, Hayden White’s Metahistory has remained an essential book for understanding the nature of historical writing. In this classic work, White argues that a deep structural content lies beyond the surface level of historical texts. This latent poetic and linguistic content―which White dubs the "metahistorical element"―essentially serves as a paradigm for what an "appropriate" historical explanation should be.

To support his thesis, White analyzes the complex writing styles of historians like Michelet, Ranke, Tocqueville, and Burckhardt, and philosophers of history such as Marx, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Croce. The first work in the history of historiography to concentrate on historical writing as writing, Metahistory sets out to deprive history of its status as a bedrock of factual truth, to redeem narrative as the substance of historicality, and to identify the extent to which any distinction between history and ideology on the basis of the presumed scientificity of the former is spurious.

This fortieth-anniversary edition includes a new preface in which White explains his motivation for writing Metahistory and discusses how reactions to the book informed his later writing. In a new foreword, Michael S. Roth, a former student of White’s and the current president of Wesleyan University, reflects on the significance of the book across a broad range of fields, including history, literary theory, and philosophy. Advanced Beginner

I purchased this textbook in order to review my knowledge of Spanish usage. I enjoyed the exercises. The level is at advanced beginner. Within the structure of a class it works well. As an instrument of self study I would not recommend it. The authors selected up to date situations and gave good examples. I have not found any flaws.

So much to learn

This the the advertising bible. If all advertising followed what is written in this book, it would be a better place with less "IN YOUR FACE" advertising. It would create a world of more thought provoking and relationship based branding influence.

It reminds you that advertising starts at the concept and is an art that you have to slowly build and perfect.
Thank you Pete, I see my job in a different light.

A must for any ad student

This covers it all, in a way I've never seen before. As a graduate of one of the world's best graduate programs for advertising, I couldn't help but notice a good piece of my education could have been skipped if I'd read this earlier. It's my bible; I still reference it though I work at a top agency in NYC. Gold.

Awesome book on how to advertise well

This book is amazing! I am only about halfway through it, but the concepts and "tools" (guidelines) that he brings up are very helpful. The pages are nice and thick, so there is no worry about handling the book gently. All of the art and ads are sketched out, which gives it a nice look. Easy reading, and enjoyable reading. Would recommend to the advertiser out there.

A Must-Have Resource for Fiction Writers

Many books for writers focus on big elements like plot and characters, but sometimes what *makes* those elements work or not are the techniques the author uses. And books with hands-on, detailed, break-it-down-to-the-nitty-gritty techniques are rare.

Even rarer are those books that do it well. This book is on that very short list. :)

I've read several of Marcy's Busy Writer's Guides books, and they're all great for those detailed techniques. However, the topic of this book--internal dialogue--is more unusual and yet so essential.

The techniques for how to properly use internal dialogue are *critical* for developing character arcs and motivations. This is advanced stuff that helps a writer go from technically proficient to a fantastic storyteller.

This is a must-read book for writers ready for more than the basics! :)

P.S. Yes, I know the author, and I'm SO glad--because that's how I heard about this fantastic, must-have resource and bought a copy for myself. :)

Excellent guide

This is the first book I've purchased in the The Busy Writer's Guide series and have been very pleased with the no-frills, straight-to-the-point approach. I come to this book having a bookcase, or more, of writing guides, but none which focus exclusively on internal dialogue. My library served me well with this book too, because the lean approach used in INTERNAL DIALOGUE meant the author referred to books and theory not presented fully in her book. I appreciated this approach but it might frustrate someone with less exposure to many of the writing titles mentioned. The chapters include: definitions, formatting, uses, balancing with external action, and POV. The most useful chapter explained the differences between direct vs. indirect internal dialogue. Kennedy also included multiple exercises for practice, but I only skimmed those since I am on a deadline. (I do intend to test them later.)

I gave Internal Dialogue a "4" only because I thought the last chapters were pared down so much to have little value. Instead, I would have preferred an advanced section, exploring creative or innovative uses of internal dialogue.

Also, I always buy physical books when shopping for writing references - ebooks are difficult to flip back and forth - but I *almost* regret buying the paperback version of this book. The plain jane formatting of the physical book actually detracts from the content.

But, overall, I think INTERNAL DIALOGUE is an excellent purchase and a useful guide, and I intend to buy other books in this series.

If only I'd had this book two years ago. I don't know Marcy Kennedy. Never met or corresponded with her. She is an awesome teacher. Straight to the point with information that is clear, concise and useful. She covers the different types of internal dialogue. Talks about using italics, she/he thought, etc.

A Great Way To Learn Lead Guitar Metal or Otherwise!

If you are a beginner and would like to learn how to play lead guitar this is a very good way to start as Culpepper starts from the very basics such as the parts of the guitar and how to hold both it and the pick and how to tune the guitar as well as the various common effects pedals and what they do. He then goes on to how to read tab as well as the basic pentatonic scale before going on to string bending, the blues and major scales, the minor scales, harmonic, arpeggios, cross and sweep picking and ending with the 7 modes of the major scale.

If you spend the considerable hours this book will keep you occupied patiently learning from cover to cover you will be greatly rewarded. Culpepper explains everything well enough and the book's illustrations are very good as well. Resist the temptation to rush through the lessons but take the time to master each before moving on to the next and then you will be ready to try even more challenging material such as those from Frank Gambale and Joe Satch.
