Vanity Fair 100 Years: From the Jazz Age to Our Age, by Graydon Carter

Vanity Fair 100 Years showcases a century of personality and power, art and commerce, crisis and culture—both highbrow and low. From its inception in 1913, through the Jazz Age and the Depression, to its reincarnation in the boom-boom Reagan years, to the image-saturated Information Age, Vanity Fair has presented the modern era as it has unfolded, using wit, imagination, peerless literary narrative, and bold, groundbreaking imagery from the greatest photographers, artists, and illustrators of the day. This sumptuous book takes a decade-by-decade look at the world as seen by the magazine, stopping to describe the incomparable editor Frank Crowninshield and the birth of the Jazz Age Vanity Fair, the magazine’s controversial rebirth in 1983, and the history of the glamorous Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
With its exhaustive sweep, visual impact, and time-capsule format, Vanity Fair 100 Years is the book everyone will want in 2013. Praise for Vanity Fair 100 Years:

“The book is a stunning artifact that begets staring, less for the words and publishing industry than as an exercise in visual storytelling reflected through the prism of society and celebrity. The best photographers, the best designers, the best illustrators all came together over Vanity Fair’s contents, and the book unfolds in page after page of stunningly rendered images, some iconic and some that never even ran.” —New York Times Book Review

A Perfect gift
By R. Mirisch
This is a marvelous publication. It's not the kind that you sit down and read cover-to-cover. Rather you leisurely flip through it and find amazing articles about whatever year or person or fad you may be interested in. It holds endless fascination with its wealth of photographic material and accompanying narratives which entertain and inform. A perfect gift for a VF lover. I bought it for my wife.

Made for a great gift
By Laura Sutherland
The Vanity Fair 100 Years book was purchased as a Christmas present for my sister - it was on her wish list - and she was thrilled. The book itself is very heavy due to the glossy paper which holds the full colour images, and yet it arrived undamaged in excellent shipping packaging. Plus it was shrink-wrapped inside so there was no damage to the binding from it sliding around inside the box. It's an oversized book, and definitely designed to sit flat on a coffee table. It could stand on a shelf, but care must be given to protect the binding from the weight of the pages. The material contained in the book consumed my sister for hours after opening it, and she still loves to pick it up and browse through it on a daily basis. A good choice for any Vanity Fair fan.

Poor Quality! Beware!
By C. Ridge Swindle
Although the price was right, the contents were not. First, the quality of the paper is unforgivable. Secondly, itching for a taste of nostalgia for a century's worth of photos, too many modern ones were used. It would have been better to buy a book of Vanity Fair art rather than magazine content. I don't regret owning the book, but, the quality of paper alone would keep me from gifting or sharing. As an avid reader of the magazine for most of my life, this book is grossly disappointing.

The Twilight Years: The Paradox of Britain Between the Wars, by Richard Overy

From a leading British historian, the story of how fear of war shaped modern England

By the end of World War I, Britain had become a laboratory for modernity. Intellectuals, politicians, scientists, and artists?among them Arnold Toynbee, Aldous Huxley, and H. G. Wells?sought a vision for a rapidly changing world. Coloring their innovative ideas and concepts, from eugenics to Freud?s unconscious, was a creeping fear that the West was staring down the end of civilization.

In their home country of Britain, many of these fears were unfounded. The country had not suffered from economic collapse, occupation, civil war, or any of the ideological conflicts of inter-war Europe. Nevertheless, the modern era?s promise of progress was overshadowed by a looming sense of decay and death that would deeply influence creative production and public argument between the wars.

In The Twilight Years, award-winning historian Richard Overy examines the paradox of this period and argues that the coming of World War II was almost welcomed by Britain?s leading thinkers, who saw it as an extraordinary test for the survival of civilization? and a way of resolving their contradictory fears and hopes about the future.

Understanding Inter-War Britain
By Thomas M. Sullivan
After having read what I considered to be a fairly extensive and diverse selection of books relating to the British public's mindset just before, during, and after World War I, and also in the period between World Wars I and II, I had come to the conclusion that it is impossible for at least we Americans to fully understand the level of disillusionment and pathos generated in the Isles by those great catastrophes. For despite sharing a common heritage, the peoples' respective histories, sociological and economic structures, and forms of government are simply too different for us to fully relate. This is not to say that one can't secure valuable insights from immensely well-written and rewarding books such as Juliet Nicolson's "The Perfect Summer" and "The Great Silence," Maureen Waller's "London 1945," and, on the post-World War II years, from David Kynaston's remarkable "Austerity Britain" and "Family Britain." Thus, I was anticipating only more ultimate frustration when I undertook Professor Overy's "The Twilight Years." I was happily mistaken.

One of the British attributes we Anglophiles hold most dear is that no matter how extreme, far-out, indeed, nutty, a Brit's outlook on life or special prejudice(s), he can invariably find a club, society, and frequently, a political party, that not only shares his views, but is well along in embellishing and perfecting them. And it was during the inter-war years that these vividly imagined and vigorously pressed views butted intellectual horns like desperately rutting bighorn sheep. Every notion of civilized life and economic, political, and social theory was up for grabs. Indeed, the very survival of civilization was mooted and the horrors of WW I, recalled when every disfigured veteran came into sight and every memorial dedicated, somehow gestated into the widely held belief that yet another war was not only necessary, but essential, to the re-vivification of civilization...or as a means of hastening its (to some, inescapable) demise.

Perhaps most interesting to the American reader is Overy's description of how the country where capitalism was conceived and first flourished came to regard it as the root of not only all economic evils, but most social ills as well. The redistribution of wealth, a concept ironically nurtured, if not born, in the same economic maternity ward which sheltered the incredible expansion of the middle class during the Victorian period, now became the mantra of the masses and the predicate for what latterly appeared as the inevitable birth of the `welfare state' at the end of WW II.

Fact is that no summary of mine can adequately describe the length and breadth of Overy's consideration of these topics and the masterly manner in which he dissects them and puts them into perspective. His narrative style may be a bit dry, and perhaps you'll learn more about a few obscure players in the drama than you care to know. But if you, as I, wish to better understand (indeed, understand for the first time) Britain during the inter-war years, I know of no better book for the purpose.

An Interesting Perspective on Britain between the Wars
By Ronald H. Clark
There are many books out there which discuss the status of Britain between the first and second wars. This one is somewhat unique in that the author focuses on ideas ("social, cultural and intellectual world"), rather than events, as the centerpoints of his analysis. The author concisely summarizes his approach and concerns in a "chronological introduction" to Britain 1919-1939. Next he briefly discusses the emotional tone present during the period--fear of war, the end of civilization, and a general feeling of dread. The first full chapter is probably the most interesting since it deals with the impact of the first war on the British psyche. Given the intense fear a new war, and its potential as a death blow, ideas such as civilization facing a crisis, impending decline and collapse, a new dark age with barbarians at the gates were prevalent. The old Victorian confidence in inevitable progress is clearly challenged. A very good second chapter discusses the perception that abusive capitalism had caused the British decline, and the author effectively discusses the ideas of the Webbs, J.A. Hobson, J.M. Keynes, G.D.H. Cole, Cyril Joad and others. Much discussion of social injustices caused by capitalism occurred during this period, and some advocated economic planning as a solution, which in fact occurred with Labour's victory in 1945.

The next several chapters discuss some key ideas, but they seemed at times overly detailed to me. The first talks about the interest during the period in eugenics, sterilization and birth control to preserve "the race." Ironically, the same kind of discussion was going on in this country as well. The impact of Freud's ideas is the subject of an interesting chapter. All this talk about the unconscious and the arrival of psychoanalysis presented such a challenge to rationality as a controlling influence, that it scared the devil out of many Britons. On top of this, further chapters discuss the fear of war, pacifist groups, the incredible fixation of the population on Hitler and what he would do next, and the Spanish Civil War which many saw as the last chance to stop Fascism short of Britain going to war itself. When war did finally come, the contrast between the high spirits on entering the first war and the mood of dark despair surrounding the second is palpable. Given all the traumas and boogiemen that had tortured the British psyche during the interwar period, this "end of civilization" mentality is quite understandable.

The book is supported by 88 pages of endnotes and a bibliograph/list of sources of 26 pages, well as abundant illustrations. This is a complex period, and although we have long known what happened, this book helps us understand why events occurred. A bit wordy though it may be, it makes a distinct contribution to our historical understanding of these vital 20 years.

An England Under Existential Threat
By A Certain Bibliophile
To read this, you would think that to live in England during the years between the two World Wars, you needed two Venlafaxine a day. Of course the First World War caused tremendous amounts of grief and worry, and threw the national and imperial economies of Europe into a tailspin. But Richard Overy paints a picture of a people who thought that they were the only bastion of civilization. They barely survived one total war. They lived for an entire generation thinking that another one would bring total ruination to everything holy, pure, and good. "The Twilight Years" looks at a wide range of topics, but this looming nihilism about chances for the future and its sure doom if another war was to rear its ugly head, are constant themes which fully inform all aspects of the book.

Several topics are traced here, starting with the dominant historiography of Western Europe during this time, namely the writings of Spengler and Toynbee, both of whose thoughts about history were colored by cyclical periods of cultural growth and renewal followed by eventual decadence and decline. Others thought that World War I was the symbolic end for capitalism, illustrating how it was now an unsustainable economic system and needed to be replaced with either Communism or something else; these ideas were prevalent on both the sides of the political spectrum.

What was one to do, then, in order to save culture from the barbarians trying to throw us headlong into another war? An ethos of cautious preservation and social utopia - the titular paradox - coexisted simultaneously. Eugenics was very much in vogue, especially by those who considered themselves members of the progressive Left, and felt that "weeding out" members of society who were not as physically or mentally fit was the obligation of the government if society was to continue on. Furthermore, everyone was in favor of both positive and negative eugenics. (Positive eugenics is aimed at encouraging reproduction among the genetically advantaged, while negative eugenics is aimed at lowering fertility among the genetically disadvantaged, including abortions and forced sterilizations.) One woman Overy mentions, a highly enthusiastic supporter of eugenics of all kinds by the name of Marie Stopes, disinherited her own son upon his announcement that he had married a woman who wore eyeglasses, thinking that she might pass her myopia onto their own children.

This was also the time when Freudian psychoanalysis was just beginning to both splinter off into its sub-schools (Adlerian, Jungian, et cetera), and when Freud started to become a household name. It was seen as just as big a panacea as eugenics, another eight ball to tell whether human nature was inherently good or evil. The answer was sure to predict whether or not another war would be inevitable. Not surprisingly, the "scientific" research into these questions yielded only inconclusive results. Political partisans would use it for their own advantage, hawks thinking that war was a part of the human condition, and pacifists thinking that it wasn't. Pacifism and all of its various incarnations all over England take up a sizeable part of the book, only fading well into the 1930s when percipient observers knew that it would take nothing short of war to stop Hitler and fascism. It was fascinating to see who hung on, though, and for how long. Aldous Huxley, for example, remained an ardent pacifist even as Hitler was invading Poland.

As others have noted, this isn't so much a social or intellectual history as it is a "history of mentalities," mostly informed by the thought of the dominant, educated classes of the time. For all of the possibly divisive material, I didn't detect any noticeable biases on Overy's part. It's clear and accessible for anyone with even a minimal background in the subject, and doesn't assume too much of the reader in the way of the minutiae of English politics. For those interested in these smaller details, he provides a useful introduction called "Britain 1919-1939: A Chronological Introduction," which gives foreign policy details, a list of prime ministers, and a note on the economy. All in all, this is a superb book for anyone interested in the very historically specific worries, anxieties, and preoccupations of England during the twenties and thirties.

East Plays West: Sport and the Cold WarFrom Routledge

The Cold War spanned some five decades from the devastation that remained after World War Two until the fall of the Berlin wall, and for much of that time the perception was that only on the Eastern side were politics and sport inextricably linked. However, this assumption underestimates the extent to which sport was an important symbol for both power blocs in their ongoing ideological struggle.

This collection of essays from leading international authorities on sport, culture and ideology brings together an impressive body of work organized around key political themes and outstanding moments in sport, and is at once a political history of sport and an illuminating new perspective on the forces that shaped this unsettled time.

Mindblowing read!
By All About Books (victoria stolte)
Veiled Obsession-
So- If you have read any of Dori's other books you know she likes to keep us wondering what is going on. This book is no different, but definitely darker than her other reads. That being said I LOVED IT. The mystery, suspense, twists and turns made me devour this book in no time and left me with such a book hangover! The feeling you get from the characters makes you feel like you are right there with them. There are some difficult topics in this one but Dori managed to do it in a way that hopefully brings awareness to those lurking around you. I can see this one as a lifetime movie for sure. She did an amazing job on this one and I cannot wait for the next installment as we are left with a bit of a cliffie. BUT that's OK I will wait mostly patiently! If you like a darker read with unnerving situations then this is going to be your new fave series!

Dangerous Intentions-
Can you say Mindf***! Wow- I thought Dori had blown me away with His Agenda which is Book one in the series, but boy did she take it much further in this one! Like explosions, well not exactly but that's how my heart was beating as I kept flipping through the pages like a little explosive bomb waiting to burst and it DID! The twists in this one I totally did not see coming and she kept me wondering how it would play out until the end. I love how the characters in her book always seem to crossover in one way or another and I found that pleasantly surprising. The story moved at a great pace and with the way this story turned out at the end it leaves me pondering what we are going to be surprised with next. The characters are very relate-able and love-able. You can feel emotion coming through the pages from them. All in all this was an epic continuation of Jude and Haley's story and I can say no more with out getting into the gory details SO I will leave it at that and let you draw your own conclusions

Broken Illusions-
Just when you think things are over... I had been anticipating this one and was definitely not disappointed! Full of wonder and suspense I could not stop flipping through the pages. I have grown to love these characters and am sad to see the series end BUT I needed closure. At first we wonder what truly happened after the last book. I found myself wondering if Haley could ever truly be happy. Was Jude really six feet under? I can't go in to too much detail as I want you to find out for yourself- But let's just say there is a twist you won't see coming. I didn't. If you need a keep you on the edge of your seat read you will definitely be pleased with this one.

I LOVE Jude! I Hate Dustin!!
By Expresso
Veiled Obsession - Book 1
This book deserves 5+ stars simply because it proves an awesome book can be written with nonexistent detailed sex scenes! Kudos Dori for managing to successfully nail that feat!

This story is what movies are made of seriously! The storyline is so awesome, the emotions of Haley are so real one can simply touch their device and FEEL her pain, and Jude is...well Jude is cray cray but on some level I was rooting for him in the beginning believe it or not. Ok so allow me to defend that statement....I'm a sucker for a rich alpha man who goes after his woman and obtains that woman by ALMOST any means necessary. I was cool with his tactics until he lost his marbles! And boy did he lose'em! I was so done with Jude the crazy dude by the end of this first book I could hardly stand it!

Surely there is some redemption in book 2 for the underdogs, Haley and Dustin. Who is Dustin? Buy and read the book! I promise you won't regret it!

This book is so far out of the spectrum of what I usually read but I am so pumped I read....no devoured this delicious story! 5+ stores for this phenomenal read!!!

Dangerous Intentions - Book 2
Oh Jude is a bad, bad, naughty, naughty boy! How will he ever redeem himself after the terrible things he's confessed to in book 2? Question of this lifetime: Jude MacKnight who and what are you????

At the end of book one, Haley successfully escapes Jude and their dysfunctional and sham of a marriage. After Haley's first failed attempt at freedom and the repercussions of that attempt, Jude was positive Haley would never try to escape again. Book 2 -Not only does she escape, she's gone for 32 days! What Jude does to commemorate each day she is not with him is sick, twisted, and unforgivable!

What do we find out in book 2- crazy is a rather tame word to describe Jude. Jude MacKnight is not Haley's husband real name. Nolan is Jude's biological brother. There is more between Haley and Dustin than we were led to believe in book 1. Last but not least, Jude knew about Haley hiding the BC pills and he switched the pills out for sugar pills (not sure what but that's my spin on the pill issue) and boom!!! Haley is preggo! She's hiding from Jude the fool, the father of her baby, and living with Dustin.

What is it about Jude that doesn't allow us to completely hate him and wish him dead? We know he is a deranged psychopath but yet there is a sliver of something that inspires empathy for him. I don't believe we've seen the last of Jude despite what we've read in book 2...the barn situation seems too neat and tidy.

This series is FANTABULOUS (yep Jude inspires me to create words because he's special) and it will definitely keep you guessing with the twists and turns! Dangerous Intentions is a great read and will definitely satisfy you until book 3 is released.

Five stars because on the low low I hope Jude will emerge and all of this will be a dream and he'll prove he's really a nice guy. I simply can't hate him....not yet.

Broken Illusions - Book 3
I'm struggling to find the words to describe how awesome Jude is in the finale to this series. Man! Jude is the crown prince of depravity and mind play! Once again he's proven why he is the MONSTER of all monsters!

Hailey has one foot in the loony bin and the other on a banana peel thanks to Jude! I begrudgingly concede that Jude may have gone a tad bit far in his revenge methods on occasion, but should one expect anything less from the crown prince?

I won't ruin this beautifully dark read by divulging any details. However, allow me to convey what we all know deep in hearts regarding this series.....things are never what they seem or reveal what we hope...

The series must be read in order to understand and appreciate the deliciousness of Jude's darkness. There are three books total, beautifully priced, and worth every minute of your money and time! Embrace the darkness and marinate in the beauty and freedom of Jude!

Five dark and lovely stars for this finale!

Incredibly great trilogy! A must read series!!!
By Linda W
Book 1 review:
Looks can be deceiving. Beautiful people sometimes hide the ugliest monsters just under their skin. You might think you have been saved from the worst horror of your life, then find you have married it.
Haley was beyond terrified when Jude saved her. Horrible circumstances left her vulnerable and alone. She didn't know what to expect from this beautiful man that swooped in to save her. She couldn't guess why he was helping her. It certainly wasn't for her benefit.
Jude was far from his saintly namesake. There was no good in that black soul of his. He played a cat & mouse game with Haley until he had her cornered in his secure home. After playing with her for a few weeks he began his transformation from savior to husband.
Haley knows something's wrong and prays she'll survive long enough to escape before Jude's dark side totally engulfs her.
Book 2 review

Haley thinks her best and only opportunity to run is sitting in her driveway. The man in Jude's office talking about a business deal has a big car unlocked and ready for her to climb in. Why is everything suddenly so easy? Is this a set up to give her a false sense that the time for escape is now? Is Jude watching her from his office, thinking of all the terrible punishments he will deliver? There's only one way to find out.
Haley is running from the monster that's held her captive for years. His twisted illusion of a marriage will kill her if she doesn't find a way out fast. Jude is doing everything in his power to keep Haley tied very securely to his side. Now his obsession has included a baby to round out their happy home.
How much more time will she have?
Thankfully the car she's hiding in belongs to someone that will do anything to protect her, but it might not be enough.
I LOVED this book. Dori Lavelle can spin a story that keeps you glued to it. This series is at the top of my dark read list.
I can't wait for the final blow in book 3.
Book 3 review

Haley thinks the worst is past her. Jude is dead and gone. She can finally take a deep breath and start moving forward. That's what she's told herself for the past 2years. He's gone. You're safe. Start living your life. She almost believes it but a tiny piece of her doesn't believe it. That little harping voice in her head keeps whispering that there's no way he could die so easily. Jude wouldn't be taken out of this world like that.
She catches things out of the corner of her eye that aren't quite right. Did she leave things on the table? What is that thing in the fridge? Is she going crazy?
Nope, she doesn't think so, but when too many things don't add up she isn't so sure anymore....
This book was the perfect ending to an incredible series. I loved everything about this story and think it's a must read!

Interpreting Films, by Janet Staiger

Employing a wide range of examples from Uncle Tom's Cabin and Birth of a Nation to Zelig and Personal Best, Janet Staiger argues that a historical examination of spectators' responses to films can make a valuable contribution to the history, criticism, and philosophy of cultural products. She maintains that as artifacts, films do not contain immanent meanings, that differences among interpretations have historical bases, and that these variations are due to social, political, and economic conditions as well as the viewers' constructed images of themselves. After proposing a theory of reception study, the author demonstrates its application mainly through analyzing the varying responses of audiences to certain films at specific moments in history. Staiger gives special attention to how questions of class, gender, sexual preference, race, and ethnicity enter into film viewers' interpretations. Her analysis reflects recent developments in post-structuralism, cognitive psychology, psychoanalysis, and cultural studies, and includes a discussion of current reader-response models in literary and film studies as well as an alternative approach for thinking about historical readers and spectators.

From Library Journal
Staiger (critical & cultural studies, Univ. of Texas) looks at historical shifts in the interpretation of films to demonstrate that "interpretative strategies do not fall from the skies; they are derived in a material context." This is at odds with many recent scholarly and intellectual trends, which work from assumptions that meaning in a text or film is "text-activated" or "reader-activated" and hence produced in a historical vacuum. Staiger first establishes her critical stance in relation to other major textual and film theories, then handles some case studies of how the receptions of particular films were shaped and later evolved. For film research collections.
