Left-Leaning Primer on U.S. Educational Issues

This work is a usable primer for political and social issues surrounding the contemporary U.S. educational system as well as providing some background history, but is marred by mediocre composition (and editing) and some leftist bias. It also provides a general introduction to the history of minority groups in U.S. education. Should be taken with a grain of salt, but a reasonable starting-off point.

Spring evinces strong opinions regarding centralized testing, and various other subjects. While certainly non-objective in multiple aspects his analysis of various themes--including testing--is nonetheless worthwhile in reminding us of the potential dangers to freedom that can arise in test-centered educational systems. In terms of flaws, Spring often makes references with less-than clear context and makes statements without evidence (e.g. publishing a 10-item list of faults with the No Child Left Behind Act by an anti-NCLB that is exaggerated and with no evidence given). Non-U.S. students may have difficulty understanding various aspects of U.S. educational history without referencing outside sources.

Great for a Greater Perspective and Understanding

I was required to read "American Education" by Joel Spring for a graduate class at Santa Clara University. I did read the book cover to cover and have found it a great way to gain a much wider perspective on the American education system. If you would like to know more about education, equality of opportunity, the way the American education system works, the challenges the US faces of having a diverse student population this is the book for you. Spring provides a lot of questions for deeper thought and reflection but does not always provide solutions or answers to those questions you would like more information about. His questions are mainly food for thought.

A worthy read and resource

Spring crafts an quality work for the most part in this book, using facts and figures to deftly illustrate the complexities that lie behind modern education, and the historical events and movements that lead to its current state. The book is constructed in two parts. The first examines the place of the school in the social setting, both in how it helps influence and, to a degree, perpetuate the larger society, and how the society influences the school, both at the local and larger scales. The second is a more detailed examination of the politics of education control, and how it influences such choices as curriculum content and textbook choices.
Throughout the book, Spring uses more anecdotes and examples, both recent and historical than one can shake a stick at, but despite the potential weighing down of the book that this could cause, he keeps it interesting and informative. He also shows remarkable clarity of statistics, considering the approach he takes. Yet he never gets too enamored by them to think that they are inherently informative.
I also must commend Spring for his even-handedness in presenting both sides of issues. Though one gains a knowledge of his own beliefs, which are fairly progressive, he brings up authors on both sides and raises questions they do to stimulate thinking.
In the long run, however, there may be a few too many statistics, and the two parts of the book do duplicate each other at times. This is definitely not a book that one should try to read all in one sitting, as their mind would begin to overflow with numbers that aren't really meant to be memorized, just referred to when the occasion calls for it.
Despite the denseness, however, Spring does a remarkable job of presenting the various issues of the day in one relatively easy to read volume.

A great book

I am relatively new to iOS programming (one year since my first contact with Objective-C) and *very* new to Arduino (how could I miss this awesome device for so long!!!???). I was looking for a way to connect my iOS device to Arduino and I came across the Redpark serial cable for iOS, sold by MakerShed. Allan's book taught me everything I needed to know to make iOS apps that will connect to my Arduino. After reading the book twice (the second time devoting extra time to write and seriously understand the code), I am now fully able to develop apps that do exactly what I needed: connect my iPod Touch or iPad to my Arduino.

If you are trying to learn to connect your iOS device to an Arduino, this book is for you. The book does require some knowledge of Objective-C (necessary for iOS programming) and C/C++ (necessary for programming Arduino sketches). Also, because you will need to run your apps in your iOS device, you will need to be an Apple developer (subscription is $99 a year).

To me, this book was worth every cent. I am now planning to buy and read all books from this author. I really liked his writing style and his cool approach to programming!

PS - The last chapter contains code that is a little dated. If you want to connect the Arduino to the Internet using the Ethernet library, just replace Server() and Client() with EthernetServer() and EthernetClient().

The book is ok, I think I just expected more

I bought this book to connect my arduino projects to my iphone and just have fun with it all. This book does teach you how to do that but the majority of the book relies on the use of a RedPark cable that you can buy for like $50. It might say it more obvious somewhere in the description but I didn't realize that until I was reading through the book. Also I should have looked at the page count because this book is THIN! The code looks pretty good (font etc.) and there are several diagrams and pictures to help you along the way so that is really nice. I haven't bought the cable yet so once I get it and play around with it I'll update my review. All in all from what I have read through it is an ok book. I honestly just wish I knew it relied so heavily on this other cable before I bought the book.

Excellent source of nutritional and health information.

I am an RN with many years experience in health care, and I find this book the best source of information on nutrition and how it relates to health. The connection between what we are taking into our bodies in the way of food, ie: preservatives, processed food, refined food, and their effects on the human body are well laid out in the book. I have taken the things I have learned here and made a major difference in my once ill daughter's life because of it. I have recommended the book to several others.

Forget Your Regular Doctors and Read This Book

I'm 30 years old and I've suffered from environmental allergies for just about all of my life. When I was younger I got frequent colds and had to receive allergy shots. Around 6th grade my allergies seemed to get worse as I had less energy and more of a foggy feeling all the time, probably the effect of my sinuses being somewhat inflamed. Through high school and college I can always remember feeling tired, less than alert, and having a kind of brain fog. I always said I felt like crap and assumed it had something to do with my allergies but didn't think it could be fixed. I did all the pills and sprays with only a little temporary relief.

Over 4 years ago all this changed for the worse. I woke up one day with intense sinus drainage, pressure throughout the front of my face and head, and an inability to be alert, energetic, or even sleep. It truly felt like I had a brain tumor. Quality of life went down to zero, I could not go a waking second without thinking about my allergies, I felt that miserable. I went to the regular doctor and an ent and ended up having a surgery to fix my very deviated septum (inside nose). I still felt terrible and started the allergy shots again which provided a minimum amount of relief. Zyrtec, singulair, pataday eye drops also became daily routines to provide small levels or relief.

About a year and a half ago I picked up this book and started to research and implement some of the topics presented. The book focused on natural solutions and I went down the list one by one. Eating better made me feel better but it didn't cure the allergy problem. Research inspired by this book allowed me to accidentally meet a Homeopathic doctor (homeopathy is mentioned in the book, although I failed to initially research it) that provided me a tailored remedy to my condition. After 6 months on this remedy my allergies have definitely improved to where I can enjoy life and not think about my allergies all the time. I still have a long way to go (I still take the anti-histamines) but I have dramatically improved my condition. I would have loved to have known this 4 years ago.

Here is my lesson for you: If you have some sort of allergy problem the solution is probably in this book. Research the topics/protocols it puts forward and implement them. Consult a naturopathic or homeopathic doctor to perfect the process, often times you need outside help to fully address your issue. Keep an open mind and don't assume you don't have one of the problems listed in the book just because it seems strange. Assume nothing and research everything. This book should serve as your bedrock in your war against allergies, it's up to you to expand off of it. It's definitely a different type of medicine which is a good thing because it has the ability to do something regular medicine doesn't: FIX YOUR CONDITION as opposed to just managing it. I hope this review helps, certainly the book will.

This book really helped me with getting on a regimine that worked. I feel so much better after following the 4 week plan that was outlined. It also does a fantastic job of explaining why these steps make sense and I've continued to follow much of the advice even after the plan because it makes such a great difference!

Slightly outdated but good for the price

This is a pretty okay book to have in your power supply design library. Yeah it's outdated a bit, but the second edition is not too bad, especially considering the low price of used copies. The second edition has a section on mag-amps, which was a pleasant surprise.

Books on Switching converter technology tend to be very dense from the beginning, overwhelming the reader with equations before even understanding topologies. This books bridges the gap as it does just that, start slowly and methodically explaining the basics and developing the analysis in that fashion. It is a great way to start understanding deeply before you break out the equations and attempt your first prototype.
