K-Gr 2--A rather pedantic retelling of the venerable Norwegian folktale is placed back-to-back with "Another Point of View." According to the Troll, who lives in a well-appointed home under the bridge, he is just being hospitable by inviting the Goats Gruff to dinner. It's not his fault that they think he wants to eat them. Newbury's Troll isn't especially fearsome he's just an ugly man and Nidenoff's illustrations for the Troll's tale feature a pastoral setting with pointy-eared, smiling, humanlike characters. True, there are two sides to every story, but for more satisfying retellings and illustrations, rely on versions by Glen Rounds (Holiday, 1993), Janet Stevens (Harcourt, 1987), and Paul Galdone (Clarion, 1979).

A hilarious children's book

I first received a copy of this book at the International Reading Association's 1996 conference when I was acting as a staff development assistant and enrichment teacher at an elementary school. It is hilarious. First, you read the traditional The Three Billy Goats Gruff to the kids and then you read the Just a Friendly Old Troll story which is told from the point of view of the troll. It is really funny. The troll says he was just misunderstood-he didn't mean he was going to eat the baby goat when he said," I'd like to have you for dinner?" but that he was inviting him to dinner trying to make friends and that when baby goat and medium goat each said wait for my bigger brother knowing that eventually big billy goat gruff would come to defend them that he thought they meant they didn't want to come to dinner without their brother.

what a cute book

I first read to my boys the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff which is just the way I remember it from when I was a child. I then flipped the book over and read to them the troll's point of view. What a cute and funny story. We all love this book. We will definitely buy other books like this one written with other classic stories telling both points of view.

Hired by one side in the conflict, an unexpected betrayal strikes down Ethan, and he vanishes. Kit goes on a rampage, terrorizing anyone with knowledge, to discover what happened to him, and mangled bodies accumulate as she searches for her brother. Knowing telepathically exactly what evil an individual has committed isn’t admissible in courts there, or heeded by corrupt sheriffs. However, possessing the truth is ample motivation for ignoring the law to Kit, and she summons help. Koban Universe #2

This spin-off story in the Koban Universe involves Ethan and his adopted (ripper) sister Kit as they visit a Wild West planet named Chisholm to drum up business for their new trouble-shooting firm, Have Genes, Will Travel. They and their young friends on Koban see the potential in using their Kobani skills as a way to finance sightseeing and adventures in a post-Krall galaxy. However things don't go quite as planned in the local range war and they end up needing to be rescued on their first mission. Every new business plan needs a little fine tuning in the beginning.

I really enjoy this series and can't wait for the next book by Bennett, either in the main series or this spin-off story from Koban: A Federation Forged in Fire. As usual, the blurb gives too much of the story away.

Fun Read!

I have always enjoyed every book from this author. This was another great book in a series of well written books.

I always find myself getting lost in this universe created by the author. An small escape from the reality of today's world when I let the book absorb me into this world of gene modified humans. Super humans.

Fun western type story with lots of action, turns and twists. Think Kit stole the show in this one. I am glad the Rippers played a major role in this book.

Lets be happy for "hard heads"! Read the book to find out why. Editing was solid.

Gets my recommendation to read. All the Koban books get that recommendation. Look forward to the next one. Wonder where the Genes will travel next.

Another excelent addition to the Kobani universe

Came across the Koban books last February and Stephen W Bennett quickly became one of my favorite authors. I have since purchased every book released and have yet to be disappointed.

While KU:1 was a collection of four short stories KU:2 is all one story.

I enjoyed this book (though slightly less than I expected).

Pros: Good story. At one point a 'norm' gets the best of a Kobani proving they are not infallible super-beings. The rippers get more page time as the dominant point of view further cementing their full sentience in the readers mind. Plenty of action. Though little of it is in evidence local fauna is introduced (I like to see local plant and wildlife it make the planets less generic feeling). The younger generation gets to encounter more of the galaxy out of their own space and grow as people due to it.

Cons: The main norm antagonists seem a little one dimensional while the secondaries get more page time and have much more depth. Not sure if this was fixed in a revision but at one point the foreshadowing was WAY to strong.

The first revision that was released had a few editing errors but Stephen is always quick to fix anything you report to him.

Solid Introductory Resource

Book that provides a basic background to all aspects of media planning with chapters ranging from 'HUT, PUT, and PUR' to 'Psychographics/Clustering', to 'Negotiating a Media Buy'. Definitions and basic terms are well set apart from the rest of the text and explained clearly and one chapter builds upon the ones before in a way that makes it easy to read without feeling overwhelmed. Written in 1995, the book is hampered a bit by being entirely lacking in any reference to Internet advertising.

Ouch!

Jim Surmanek may know a great deal about media planning. However, most of the people who attempt to read this book will never discover that. Why? Jim does not know how to communicate effectively. I have not made it too far into this book, and every inch has been a struggle. What I have learned thus far could have been expressed in one, maybe two, paragraphs.
Jim's opening sentence (in his Introduction to the book) reads, "Advertising media are dynamic and ever changing." Traditionally the opening sentence in any book is very important: The first sentence is the sentence that is to hook the reader, engage us, entice us, make a proposal that the writer will later explain and document. The first sentence must be superbly well constructed. It must do something meaningful. Jim took this valuable space and chose to say one thing twice, and repeat himself while being redundant. Good heavens, wasn't that fun? An opening sentence that says "media does not stay the same" is not very engaging or informative. Perhaps Jim assumes that most of his readers don't know that. Perhaps Jim thinks most of readers are watching a black and white nine-inch screen, have never heard of cable, and have to wait for the tubes in their radios to warm up before they can listen to the weekly episode of Mystery Theatre.
His next sentence reads, "The entire spectrum of media outlets changes almost daily." (Jim explains "change": new radio or television stations, changed formats, new magazines, etc.) Now, how can that be true? That the entire spectrum would change almost daily. That the spectrum changes daily, yes. But the entire spectrum of media outlets changes almost daily? Does he really mean to tell his readers that nearly every radio and television station, nearly every magazine and newspaper, and nearly every billboard changes owners or formats nearly every day? No, but that is what he says.
I skipped the first two chapters to take a look at Chapter 3, "HUT, PUT, and PUR." Appropriately enough, Jim explains what HUT, PUT, and PUR are. Several times. That is, several times before he repeats himself. He also shares some fascinating data with us: "People Using Radio (PUR) levels also vary." (That is important for the readers to know because most of the readers have no idea that people turn their radios on and off.)
Jim continues, "Adult listening peaks in the 6-10 P.M. period..." Now that didn't make sense to me. I thought adults listened to their radios more during "drive time" and while at work than when they got home in the evenings. So I looked at the table attached to this text (3.3) only to discover that of the five time periods Arbitron reports (and Jim uses in the table), the two busiest adult time periods are the 6 AM to 10 AM and the 10 AM to 3 PM periods. In fact, the time period Jim claims as the "adult peak," has less than half as many listeners as these morning/daytime periods. The only time with a smaller audience than Jim's "adult peak" is the Midnight to 6 AM time period!
As I continue along, still in Chapter 3, I see a Table (3.4) with a whole bunch of numbers. Jim never references this table or explains what it reveals. The numbers don't seem to relate to anything else in the chapter. I also notice that Table 3.4 is followed by a second Table 3.2 that does not give the same data as the first Table 3.2.
If you want to be thoroughly confused, love misinformation, enjoy reading the same "fact" presented three or four times, and want to be talked to like a child, buy this book. Savor it; it is a gem.
If I could return this book I would. I can't. Fortunately I live in a cold climate. I have a fireplace. I will put this book to good use.

Good book (especially for the Java Developer learning Scala)

Good book. It starts with a coverage of the syntax and mechanics of the scala language and moves on to cover functional programming and concurrent programming in scala. This would be a good book for anyone coming from Java to work through. For the absolute beginner (to Scala), a couple of readings may be in order.

Nothing new

The book is great for a novice java developer or a scala beginner. It provides a run down of all the language features and nuances. I did not learn anything new or different than what I have seen in Venkat's videos on youtube and highly recommend Scala for the impatient as an alternative to this book. Watch Venkat's scala videos on youtube instead of buying this book for a steep price.

I just finished reading Rosenberg's "Screendance" and feel at once legitimized and inspired. At last! a text that moves beyond the generalizations often borne out of the suspicion and clumsiness attached to `beginnings' and embraces hybridity in practice and thinking. This is a call to arms written with potency--generously articulated from a multiplicity of perspectives yet with the strength and deliberateness of an individual voice. This is a seminal text that I know will be central in my own doctoral research.

About the Author

S Balaram is an industrial designer, senior faculty and former Chairman of Education at the National Institute of Design (NID) in India. He is presently Dean of D.J. Academy of Design, Coimbatore.

He is recipient of the honorary fellowship of the Society of Industrial Designers of India and an invited member of the advisory board of ‘Design Issues’, USA. Four inventions of Balaram have been patented by NID. The institute also won the first International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), Philips Award for its outstanding achievement in industrial design. One of the seven projects which won this award was designed by Balaram. A life-saving medical equipment which he and a colleague jointly designed for Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology was awarded India’s prestigious National Meritorious Invention Award. He was recipient of Ron Mace international award for Universal Design.

Born into a farmer’s family in Gunnathota Valasa, a tiny Agraharam (a village gifted to a scholar by the king) in Andhra Pradesh, South India, Balaram did his post-graduation in Product Design from the NID, Ahmedabad and a research course at the Royal College of Art, London. He holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He started his professional career as a sign-board painter and later became a mechanical engineer, finally settling down to design practice and teaching. His varied pursuits include short story writing, package design and film criticism.

He has held senior positions such as Chairman of Extension Programmes, Co-ordinator, Foundation Programme, Associate Chairman and Industrial Design at the NID. He was Governing Council Member of

The Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Vice-President of The Society of Industrial Designers of India and Co-ordinator, Design Foundation Studies, NID. He founded the Craft Development Institute in Kashmir.

His published writings form part of books such as The Idea of Design: Arthaya, Design and Development in South and South-East Asia and Quality through Industrial Design. His article on bullock cart design was prescribed as core course for secondary schools throughout India by the National Council of Educational Research and Training.

Robert D. Kaplan is the bestselling author of sixteen books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including Asia’s Cauldron, The Revenge of Geography, Monsoon, The Coming Anarchy, and Balkan Ghosts. Monsoon is essential reading for those with an interest in modern geo-politics. Outstanding.

I like to spend time with people who are not simply better informed than me but with people who are measurably smarter than me. Kaplan counts in both categories. In Monsoon he takes us on a voyage around the rim of the Indian Ocean. He spends almost half the book delving deeply into India, well the old British Raj in any case. He does it in a unique way. He treats the various chunks of the vast sub-continent separately, which I found very useful. By digging into the regional histories, economies and cultures we can more easily piece together the over reaching interplay of Chinese influence vs Indian interests.
All of the Monsoon nations have great challenges before them from insurgencies to population increase and competition for the resources to propel them into a more prosperous future.
Kaplan writes with a powerful pen but clearly, directly and in a style that the layman can access with ease. He makes a good case for the Indian Ocean region being the next global break out area. It has a huge population, vast resources and a growing accumulation of military power.

Kaplan is, as he is so often, ahead of the curve

The most illuminating, well written and personally impactful book on international relations I have read since Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations. Kaplan delves into the history of the littoral countries of the Indian Ocean, detailing the regions history of vibrant trade, violent conflict and imperial designs. In short, Kaplan theorizes that as American hegemony experiences slow, relative decline, the Indian Ocean will cease to be a region stabilized by a single power and instead will be host to a group of simultaneously competing and cooperative powers. Increasingly, it's the middle class of this region that will be the audience of world events. The United States won't disappear as a regional power, to be sure, but it will be sharing these Monsoon waters with others. Kaplan offers advice and guidance for the United States in this coming era, and argues that with a delicate balance of hard and soft power, the United States can help shape the region into one that is peaceful and beneficial for all.

No one does this as well as Robert Kaplan

This was a terrific read. I first discovered Mr. Kaplan in his more recent "Revenge of Geography", and vowed to read everything of his I could get my hands on. The theme of "Monsoon" is that the Indian Ocean will become the next major commercial waterway for the world (hence the title), because it is the connector of an emerging Africa and a burgeoning economic power in South Asia. He then proceeds to define the role of each of the territories bordering the Indian Ocean in this new order. Kaplan's knowledge of the region's geography, history, and ethnography is exhaustive, and the reader will be challenged to keep up with both the sweep and the detail of his story; but it will be an immanently rewarding effort for those who do.

For the record, I will respectfully (and with some trepidation) disagree with Mr. Kaplan that the Indian Ocean is destined for global waterway primacy, and my reason is the two largest populations bordering this immense body of water, Africa and India, are simply too poor to be commercially significant before the world's population and economic growth (hopefully) reverses itself and settles at a sustainable level. China will probably grow in this century to become the world's largest economy, but the principal global commerce will then be across the Pacific, between China and the US. And the commercial trading today between the EU and the US, the first and second largest global economies, respectively, will continue to grow over the years. So I can see the Indian Ocean will indeed rise in relative importance to these other two extensive trading relationships, but it will not become the world's most important waterway.

This is a well-told story. "Monsoon" was a thoroughly informative read, and I enjoyed it immensely.
